Tigers Trounce Yanks, 8-5

(Newser) – Carlos Guillen's first-inning grand slam off Yankee hurler Mike Mussina set the pace for Detroit's 8-5 triumph in the Bronx last night. New York, unable to muster much offense outside of a Bobby Abreu homer in the third, continued its bullpen woes: reliever Ron Villon's meltdown in the seventh all but shattered the Bombers' shot at a comeback.

The game was the first in a four-game series that is crucial for both squads: while Detroit  hangs on to a half-game lead over Cleveland in the AL Central, the Yanks hope to keep the AL East-leading Red Sox within reach, having already fallen 5 1/2 back with last night's damage.  Meanwhile, New York's Jason Giambi was 1-for-5 in his return from the disabled list.
