(Newser) – Three men have died and six were injured in another collapse at a Utah mine where the team was working to save six trapped miners, reports the New York Times. "It's a devastating blow to what was already a tragic situation," said the local mayor. The accident yesterday evening was caused by seismic shaking that has plagued the rescue operation.

A tunneling machine was buried Wednesday in a collapse. "This mountain is still alive," said mine co-owner Robert Murray. "The seismic activity has been relentless." The latest tragedy compounds the agony of friends and family waiting for word of the lost miners, trapped in a cave-in ten days ago. Rescuers had been optimistic earlier yesterday after picking up sounds deep in the mine.

(NEWSER) - After nine days, workers yesterday recovered the body of Larry Marek, who was trapped during a cave-in in an Idaho silver mine. Marek and his brother, Mike, had just finished watering down blasted-out rock and ore in the mine on April 15 when the ceiling collapsed in a 6,150-foot-deep tunnel. His brother escaped unharmed. Rescue crews spent days toiling around the clock, digging through debris and working to build a second intersecting tunnel in hopes of reaching him alive, the AP reports. Digging machine could help speed up efforts

(NEWSER) - Rescuers worked through the night and were still at it today, but a man trapped in an Idaho mine since Friday remains underground. A remote-controlled digging machine was brought in today, the AP reports, but it must be disassembled and then reassembled more than a mile below ground, and it’s not yet clear how long that will take. Larry Marek, a 30-year mining veteran, was working in the Lucky Friday silver mine when a tunnel roof collapsed Friday, trapping him more than a mile underground. More»

But mine should reopen, civic leaders say

(NEWSER) - As New Zealand mourns the 29 miners lost in Tuesday’s second explosion , civic leaders are already calling for the mine to be reopened. "A big part of our economy on the west coast is coal and, yes, we want our men back down the mine working,” says the district mayor, “but we want them in a safe environment." Authorities are committed to retrieving the miners’ bodies, but poisonous and combustible gas levels are still so high that the process could take weeks or months, the BBC reports. More»

Miners Already Breaking 'Blood Pact'

(NEWSER) - While they were trapped, the Chilean miners signed a "blood pact" stating that they’d keep the details of their experience to themselves. But information has spilled as many consent to interviews—though rarely for free, the New York Times reports. “We’re poor—look at the place we live,” said the wife of one miner. “You live off our stories, so why can’t we make money from this opportunity to feed our children?” Miners have reportedly requested anywhere from $40 to $25,000 for interviews. “We paid $500,” said a Japanese newspaper reporter who spoke with the first man to exit the mine. “And it felt like he was withholding details.” More»
