Defiant North Korea Fires Another Missile

(Newser) – So much for international outrage. North Korea fired off yet another short-range missile tonight, reports South Korea's Yonhap news agency. The missile is the third launched by Pyongyang since its nuclear test yesterday. Analysts suspect the North is engaging in a bit of saber-rattling, possibly to keep US and South Korean reconnaissance planes from nosing around for information about the nuke test. More missiles are expected.

(NEWSER) - North Korea raised international tensions even higher today by test-firing two new missiles off its east coast, AP reports. The missiles—one ground-to-air and one ground-to-ship—had a range of some 80 miles, according to South Korean officials, who believe North Korea fired an additional three missiles after its nuclear test yesterday that outraged world leaders. The UN Security Council yesterday called the nuclear test a "violation" of a weapons resolution and is weighing sanctions. More»

(NEWSER) - North Korea’s announcement today that it is preparing to launch an "experimental communications satellite" on one of its rockets has raised fears that a long-range missile test is imminent, CNN reports. US and South Korean officials, citing intelligence reports, believe that the country is preparing to launch a missile with an intended range of 4,200 miles and are closely monitoring developments. South Korea calls North's explanation 'a usual nonsensical claim'

(NEWSER) - South Korea says the North's explanation for yesterday's exchange of fire along the Northern Limit Line is a bunch of malarkey, reports the Wall Street Journal . The North claims that it didn't fire any weapons, but in fact the South simply mistook "normal blasting" from construction work. "It's a usual nonsensical claim from North Korea. We don't feel any need to respond it," said a spokesman for South Korea's Defense Ministry. South Korea maintains that the North fired five rounds of artillery in two bursts toward the disputed border region in the Yellow Sea that divides the Koreas. More»
