Ooops: Socialist Quote Sure to Dog Sotomayor

Princeton yearbook cites would-be prez Norman Thomas

(Newser) – Conservatives are likely to go crazy any second now, when they realize that Sonia Sotomayor is a (gasp) socialist. Sotomayor’s Princeton yearbook quote—“I am not a champion of lost causes, but of causes not yet won”—is from Norman Thomas, a six-time presidential candidate of the Socialist Party of America, Gawker reports. The best part? Obama’s people helpfully included the yearbook page in their Sotomayor press kit.

Perhaps, the Cajun Boy speculates, Obama was trying to get in front of the story, make the quote seem like old news. Or maybe the White House was trying to provoke a distracting, hysterical outburst from the far right. Or maybe, just maybe, “Obama is just so confident in his nominee that he doesn’t care about trivial horseshit like her quoting a socialist over 30 years ago.”

"I am not a champion of lost causes, but of causes not yet won." This could be said of anyone who wants to fight for what they believe in. This is not a liberal, socialist or conservative ideal. It's a human beings view of where they want to go and what they want to accomplish. Good for her. The problem with the GOP, is they have not original thought or idea. They get them from movies, tv shows and old war films. Their perception of life doesn't come from reality it comes from fantasy and that is why the party is having such a problem right now.

Thomas was one of the few public figures to oppose the internment of Japanese Americans following the attack on Pearl Harbor. Thomas accused the ACLU of "dereliction of duty" when the organization supported the internment. Thomas also campaigned against racial segregation, environmental depletion, anti-labor laws and practices, and in favor of opening the United States to Jewish victims of Nazi persecution in the 1930s.[Wikipedia]

If favoring Social Security, progressive taxation, and single payer health insurance with coverage for all makes me a socialist-- I'm proud to wear that label. And here's another Norman Thomas quote for you: "The difference between Democrats and Republicans is: Democrats have accepted some ideas of Socialism cheerfully, while Republicans have accepted them reluctantly” Thomas was a Christian Socialist. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/N...
