It may be hard to believe now, but Barack and Michelle Obama have weathered "frosty" times in their marriage because of politics, according to a new book. During a painful stretch in 2000 "there was little conversation and even less romance," said Renegade author Michael Wolffe, who covered Obama's campaign for Newsweek. "She was angry at his selfishness and careerism; he thought she was cold and ungrateful."

Obama had just lost a congressional race, and Michelle had 2-year-old Malia at home, reports the New York Daily News. "She hated the failed race, and their marriage was strained by the time Sasha was born," Wolffe wrote. "Politics seemed like a waste of time to Michelle." But she finally got behind her husband's political ambitions. "We're going to be fine," she told him. "We just have to make sure the girls are fine."
