(Newser) – The night before Barack Obama's landmark Cairo speech, a documentary filmmaker headed out to the streets of Jerusalem to ask young Israelis and "droves" of American Jews what they thought of the president's Middle East overtures, notes Gawker. The result is "the most shocking footage I have ever filmed," says Max Blumenthal: Educated youths calling the president "a Muslim, for sure," a "terrorist," and a notorious racial slur.

The filmmaker asks a simple question: "What do you think of Obama and Israel?" All of the interview subjects are from relatively wealthy economic backgrounds and had a strong command of the Israeli political situation—although several were visibly drunk. "These people and their families are the core of the opposition to meaningful peace between Israel and her neighbors," wrote a Blumenthal assistant. "This is what Obama is up against."

Not all college kids act this way. SOME college kids need money to pay for school, so they work 2 or 3 jobs. SOME students don't have the time OR money for such activities. SOME, not all. I think the key phrase above "relatively wealthy economic backgrounds". SILVER spoon-fed brats, with NO CLUE often sound like this, yet will be the first to accuse someone of being an anti-Semite. After watching the video I am not surprised. And I don't think ALL Jews - Israeli, American, European, or otherwise- feel the same way. But these kids must get their political views from somewhere, and I'm willing to bet it's where they get the "relatively wealthy economic backgrounds". It amazes me how there is this resentment that Obama went to Arab nations, and NOT Israel. My impression is that they weren't so much upset because Obama addressed an Arab natinon, but rather they feel Obama hasn't done enough FOR Israel. These young people have expressed a sentiment OVERTLY. How many ADULTS and PEOPLE IN POWER express these exact same sentiments COVERTLY?

That was my entire point, this documentary found the most radical and ignorant views and in so doing intended on demonstrating the irrational and unreasonable radical views of a small group of kids. What do you think would happen if you questioned college kids in the States about the same topic? You don't think you'd get some incredibly ignorant and irrational answers? You don't have to be non-Jewish to breed antisemitism, antisemitism is found wherever there are people promoting a negative view of Jews. You don't think that Bernard Madoff is promoting antisemitism every moment that he continues to breath? He is a Jew and he has provided a terrible example to the world of what Jews represent and are capable of. For every Bernard Madoff there are 10 more poor Rabbis with 8 children who ask nothing more of the world than to be able to practice their beliefs freely and find a way to provide for their families. Maybe American-Israelis are really all ignorant misguided idiots, maybe there is no hope left for the Jewish people, but I cannot begin to believe that at this point in time. I'm Jewish, and I'm not very religious, but my grandparents all suffered through Hitler's concentration camps, they survived a country's attempt in exterminating them as a people. I know that for my grandfather, after suffering for years in concentration camps and losing his entire family, it was very difficult for him to have faith in God after he survived - he was supposed to consider himself "lucky". I'm no conservative, I believe that Obama has a chance at doing some good, in fact I pray to God that he does succeed, because the world needs a voice of reason right now - it needs to regain faith in SOMETHING. Btw Traveller, you are absolutely right, name calling and storytelling is all the right-wing Christian freaks have on their side right now--good for them though, because it isn't doing a damn thing. What you aren't right about is that Israel is a friend of the United States, they always have been, and they always will be. It is easy for them to become frustrated because they are fighting a different war than we are, they have been dealing with terrorist attacks since their conception, they know what its like to have casualties of war on a daily basis and they are sick and tired of it. They want some peace, they want to live life without fear, they want to not have to worry that a rocket will kill one of their children at school tomorrow. Is that so inhumane? Yes, we are to some degree--I don't dispute that. However, to know that 3 billion tax dollars are going to support this is tough to take. Moreover, I've been reading the Jerusalem Post and am simply stunned at the vitriolic nonsense I read there--some of it pure hatred of Obama and the US. For me it is not a religious question: I have a Jewish uncle and several Jewish friends, all of whom I love and respect. For me, it's an issue of international law, human rights, and peace. America has committed terrible crimes, but right now they're being discussed and will (hopefully) be dealt with. But for our bi-national citizens to rail against the US with such ferocity and malice is unacceptable, not to mention the Israelis themselves. Israel is free to do as it pleases, but it is not entitled to US financial, military, and political support when this is the kind of garbage that gets thrown in return. The US has spent an estimated 114 billion dollars on Israel's security, and we've gotten precious little in return. Obama is the most courageous American leader in ages, and he is the best hope in ages for true and lasting Israeli security. However, if Israel wants to spit in his and our collective face, they can do so without getting another cent of US taxpayer money. Our religious extremists were voted out of office, but Israel has newly elected theirs. Obama and many in the US are rejecting war, violence, and oppression--if Israel wants to hold on to these, they do so on their own. I've come to think that many in Israel wouldn't know what to do if their victim identity were suddenly stripped away, and therefore they perpetually create situations in which that identity can flourish. They use the horror of the Holocaust as a manipulation tool to hold the world hostage in this never-ending circle of violence. Would the victims and survivors of Shoa be proud of this video? I have been to Auschwitz and sat and cried in sadness at what happened there. It is because of that experience that my current feelings are NOT anti-Jewish but are indeed anti-Israeli government and (some) people. I contribute regularly to Israeli/Jewish groups working for peace and will continue to do so. These people, along with others in the Israeli government and press are the true enemies of Israel, just as Bush/Cheney and the neocons are true enemies of the US. Until they're put in their place, we in the US should NOT fund or in any way support their garbage. In any case, sadtimes, I hope for all of us that this situation changes--we MUST learn to live together in peace and mutual respect.

Traveller: You are right in many ways, the Israelis do create their identity based around being victims, but keep in mind that only 60 years ago the Israelis were the ones victimizing people. How did the Jews form Israel anyway? At first they purchased land from absent-Arab landlords, but then when the Arabs started resenting their settlements they formed terrorist groups of their own and began to settle by force. The problem, like many in post-colonial history, can be traced back to the Balfour Declaration and the ambiguity of a British agreement that left two people in a struggle for the same territory. The fact that both groups had religious claims to the land just made things worst. When the Israelis became too much of a problem for the British to handle they just gave up and decided to let them do what they wanted. I know I've gone off on a bit of a tangent, but the point I'm getting at is that the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is one of the most personal nature, it is one which has been going on since ancient times and is biblical in origin. I can easily see how Israelis might be offended when President Obama tells them that he is going to settle this once and for all and asks them to compromise without any meaningful resolution from the Palestinians. People talk about war crimes, they talk about human rights, but why is this even an issue? Why does Israel have over 400 roadblocks regulating Palestinian travel? From what I understand, and please correct me if I'm wrong, its because radical Palestinian terrorists have been attacking innocent Israelis for 40 years. Suicide bombings have decreased 90% since the roadblocks were established. At what point do you lose your concern for human rights and international law in the pursuit of peace? At what point do you forget what peace is, forget how to engage in mutual respect? Unfortunately I think that point was long ago, and I do not think that President Obama is going to be able to wave his hands and speak a few eloquently chosen words and resolve a conflict that has been consuming two peoples for thousands of years. When it comes down to it, the Palestinians hate the Jews, and the Jews hate the Palestinians, and they both want Jerusalem, and the Israelis will never negotiate on those terms. It is easy for the U.S. to achieve peace, all we have to do is stop interfering with countries thousands of miles away and let them settle their own disputes, it isn't that easy for Israel, their enemies are their neighbors and their problem is in their own back yard. I do have hope for Obama, but one thing I think you are missing is that he's just as radical as Bush or Cheney, he's just not an idiot and he's a pragmatist. When it comes down to it he is simply the other side of the spectrum, thankfully a side with a lot more hope and reason, but still a radical in nature and design. Reply

This video is appalling, there is no question about that. I am a religious American Jew who spend my last year in Israel after completing high school. I am the exact age of the kids in the video. I come from the same "relatively wealthy economic background" as them. In fact, I attended the same private Jewish day school with two of the boys in the video. While the harsh words thrown around in this video are completely disgraceful, they are not representative of the feelings of American Jews, and to portray it in such a way is unfair. What we have been presented with in this video is a bunch of drunk, belligerent adolescents (one of whom I have known since the third grade), and after reading the comments on this video, it is completely understandable that based on this footage, people would be wary of any form of support for Israel. I would feel the same if I did not understand the culture of what is going on here. Sure, these kids are educated, they learn both general and Judaic studies in their day schools. But they do not, in reality, know very much about politics, and believe me, being an American Jew in Israel does not mean that you know the inner-workings of American or even Israeli politics... A political science major who doesn't know who Benjamin Netanyahu is? Is that really the kind of person to base or even slightly change your views on the importance of supporting Israel? The issue at hand is a huge and complicated one, but this video should not have any baring on important decisions. Sure, these kids were drunk, idiotic, and most appalling to me, racist, and their drunken rants were disgraceful. It makes me very sad to think that these kids, filmed in a bar late at night could be affecting the way America views Israel. Please... before forming important opinions, remember the money and support being provided to Israelis to help them defend themselves has nothing to do with these drunk kids, who are using their year in Israel to waste their parents money and take advantage of the Israeli drinking age of 18, and who will, by the end of the summer, return back to America. Perhaps, Mr. Blumenthal, you should try conducting a similar interview out on Ben Yehuda Street in the middle of the day, speaking to Israelis who want peace and who care about the future of their country. I'm sure that we would all relieved to hear what they have to say. Reply
