Obama Promises 600K Stimulus Jobs

Public works, schools, summer youth programs to see US cash

(AP) – President Barack Obama promised today to deliver more than 600,000 jobs through his $787 billion stimulus plan this summer, with federal agencies pumping billions into public works projects, schools, and summer youth programs. Obama is ramping up his stimulus program this week, promising an accelerated pace of federal spending over the next few months to boost the economy and produce jobs.

The announcement comes even as his advisers are downplaying expectations about when the spending plan will stem the nation's rising unemployment. Many of the stimulus plans that Obama announced today already were in the works, including hundreds of maintenance projects at military bases, about 1,600 state road and airport improvements, and federal money budgeted for 135,000 school staff.

(NEWSER) - Despite last-minute efforts by the White House, the House Energy and Commerce Committee panel today authorized subpoenas for internal White House documents related to the Solyndra mess. The Washington Post calls the move “apparently unprecedented.” President Obama’s top lawyer had sought a deal and White House officials had delivered some 20,000 more pages of emails and other documents to investigators yesterday, while Democrats on the panel fought the decision; the vote nonetheless came down 14-9 along party lines. Beacon Power adds to Obama administration's post-Solyndra woes

(NEWSER) - More potential trouble for the Obama administration: On the heels of Solyndra, another federally-backed power company has gone bankrupt. A year ago, Beacon Power received a $43 million loan guarantee from the Department of Energy, Reuters reports. The company drew down $39 million of that loan for a $69 million energy storage plant in Stephentown, New York. But the Energy Department says Beacon Power's woes aren't quite as bad as Solyndra's: The New York plant is still running despite the bankruptcy, marking a contrast to Solyndra’s shutdown. More»

(NEWSER) - Worry no longer about an impending double-dip recession—it’s already here, says George Soros. “I think we are in it already,” the billionaire investor told CNBC , citing Republicans’ rejection of fiscal stimulus as a key problem. “We have a slowdown and basically a conflict about whether the rich ought to pay taxes to create jobs or not,” he said. (NEWSER) - In March 2009, in the throes of the financial crisis, Barack Obama told Tim Geithner to focus on a proposal to dissolve Citigroup—but the Treasury Secretary ignored him and never developed a plan, according to former Wall Street Journal reporter Ron Suskind’s new book Confidence Men.
