Karl Rove fired back today at Maureen Dowd for criticizing former President Bush’s frequent vacation time in Texas, Politico reports. “I think Maureen Dowd is a bitter, twisted, deranged columnist for the New York Times,” Rove told Fox News, “who misses no opportunity to show her disdain for the conservative side of the aisle.” Rove added that he likes her writing.

Rove recalls that he once “wasted a couple bucks on some flowers to give Maureen Dowd” to put “a smile on her face. And that didn't even work.” Rove is more upset about her handling of the former president. “Why she felt so compelled to go out and trash somebody who did our country a great service for eight years and handled himself in an admirable fashion is just typical of Maureen Dowd's twisted, bitter little heart," he said. "I admire her writing, but she is a very nasty, snarky person." (More Karl Rove stories.)
