Phish Comes Back Strong at Bonnaroo

(Newser) – Phish, the Beastie Boys, Animal Collective, and Public Enemy highlighted a gorgeous day for Bonnaroo yesterday, write Troy Carpenter and Jeff Vrable in Billboard, after a sadly sodden opening on Thursday. In the first of their two days as festival headliners, Phish announced their comeback after a 5-year hiatus with a set full of crowd-pleasers, ending the night with a playful rendition of the Beatles’ “Day in the Life.”

"I'm so incredibly happy to be here," Phish's Trey Anastasio told the crowd. The Beastie Boys were one of the day’s earlier highlights, bringing New York rapper Nas out to debut a track from their upcoming album, while Public Enemy stuck with old school hits. Animal Collective drew a huge crowd at the Which Stage, followed by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, TV On the Radio, and David Byrne. Organizers say they expect 75,000 to attend the annual Tennesee festival, which wraps up tomorrow with a Phish encore, just shy of a sell-out.

If playing at the biggest summer festival (75,000 people) with all of the hottest currently touring acts qualifies as overrated, consider the fact that in 2000 phish put on, without any other bands on the bill, the biggest New year's concert (85,000) IN THE WORLD. In the summer of '96 they put on a fest without any other bands for 60k people. Now think back to 1991 when the only national media coverage the band got was to have their first major lable release be put on Time magazine's "top 10 worst albums of the year" list. Phish attained their popularity without ever having a hit single--no videos on MTV (except for the time they were dissed by Beavis and Butthead) and no radio play. Did I mention these guys have little to no sex-appeal? Their popularity came entirely from open trading of audience-made bootleg tapes, and word of mouth testimonials from people who had been to their shows. Finally, they grew so big that they could no longer be ignored and now with a sense of reluctance from all sides (the press, the fans, and the band) they are part of the mainstream music scene. Certainly they won't be everybody's cup of tea, and you are welcome to take it or leave it, but considering the total absence of media hype during their unconventional route to the top, to call them "overrated" is inaccurate and unfair.
