Reds Deal Conine to Mets

Posted Aug 20, 07 11:45 PM CDT in Sports    Editor's Choice

(Newser) – The Cincinnati Reds traded outfielder Jeff Conine to the New York Mets for two minor leaguers yesterday. While Conine says he's thrilled with the chance to take part in a pennant race with the leaders of the National League East, the struggling Reds continue their efforts to build a winning squad with young prospects. The deal hands Cincinnati shortstop Jose Castro and outfielder Sean Henry.

Both Castro and Henry move to Double-A Chattanooga from their Florida State League club. Castro, 20, has 2 homers, 25 RBI, and a .318 average with St. Lucie, while Henry, 22, is .293 with 57 RBI and 11 dingers. Cincinnati has called up outfielder Jorge Cantu to replace Conine.
