Weak gains for Nasdaq, S&P cap week of losses

Stocks ended mixed for the day and lower for the week, as gains in financials made up for losses in energy spurred by falling oil prices, MarketWatch reports. Bank of American and American Express each rose about 2%, which analysts saw as investors covering short positions. The Dow fell 15.87 to 8,539.73. The Nasdaq added 19.75, settling at 1,827.47, and the S&P 500 rose 2.86, closing at 921.23.

  • For the week, the Dow lost 3%, the Nasdaq declined 1.7% and the S&P fell 2.7%.
