Sotomayor Quits Elite Women-Only Club

Republicans say Belizean Grove membership violates judicial code

(Newser) – Sonia Sotomayor has ended her membership in an exclusive women-only club following pressure from GOP lawmakers, Politico reports. Senators suggested the Supreme Court nominee's membership in the Belizean Grove—a 120-strong club of influential women that hosts annual Latin American retreats—violated codes of conduct banning judges from belonging to discriminatory organizations.

Sotomayor maintained that the club did not "invidiously" discriminate against men, but said she didn't want her membership to become a distraction. The Belizean Grove, set up as a female equivalent to the secretive men-only Bohemian Grove society, was little-known before Sotomayor's membership became an issue. The club, whose members include high-ranking women from Wall Street and the military, has now been inundated with membership requests.

The Belizean Grove is a constellation of influential women who are key decision makers in the profit, non-profit and social sectors.
- excerpt from Belizean Grove mission statement

The Grove is an extraordinary grouping of talented, compassionate and passionate women. I am deeply honored to have been included. The joy of participating in your fun in Peru was wonderful. - testimonial from Sonia Sotomayor

Why stop at these two. Why don't we look at ALL members of our government and see their involvement in AL clubs: Masons, OES, Shriner's, all that.

thanos, I am well aware that the "wise latina" comment was not a blanket statement, which is why I said "saying IN SOME SITUATIONS that a wise white man might make better decisions". The qualifier doesn't matter, though, if the case in question was some child custody or child support/divorce proceeding, where the judge in question felt a man was getting railroaded, and he said that in that case a wise white man might make a better decision, the judge would get EATEN ALIVE.

Ok, anchower, where DO you draw the line? Women were oppressed for tens of thousands of years, so in tens of thousands of years we can start to make things equal? You might be "perfectly all right" with that, but most people aren't. What's next? all African Americans are allowed to take white slaves for a few hundred years? Native Americans get to burn all of our houses down? It's shitty what some people in the past did to each other. You can't "make it even" by selectively applying the rules now.
