Wal-Mart Owns Up to Melamine in Dog Treats

Posted Aug 22, 07 10:20 AM CDT in World US Business Science & Health

(Newser) – Two Chinese brands of dog treats sold at Wal-Mart contain a toxic chemical, the discount giant confirms. Customer complaints about the products prompted the company to quietly pull them from its shelves last month as it waited for further tests. The results confirmed the presence of melamine, the chemical at the center of another recall in March.

Wal-Mart, which blocked further sale of the products in July, said yesterday it was unsure if levels of the toxic chemical in the tainted products could sicken or kill a dog, the AP reports. But a Pennsylvania woman alleged her dog died after eating the treats. Wal-Mart urged customers to return the products to the nearest store for a refund.
