Eat Our Steeds? Horsefeathers!

Brits scoff at having to sign EU pledge not to eat their horses

Share

(Newser) – British horse owners are sputtering at a European Union directive requiring them to sign a pledge stating they won't eat their animals, the Telegraph reports. The Brits say the order—aimed at preventing veterinary drugs from entering the food supply in countries where horses are commonly eaten—has left them insulted at the very suggestion they might plan to put their ponies in the pot.

"I'd like to be a fly on the wall when the Queen and Princess Anne are asked to sign a form saying they're not going to eat their horses," scoffed the leader of an anti-EU party.

British horse lovers say they are perplexed by EU orders to promise not to eat their animals.

We don't see our horses as cattle. The thought of them being eaten is utterly repulsive. Brussels is poking its nose in where it should
not be. - Scottish stable owner Kate Gillanders

If we're going to eat animals then let it be the largest one, like whales or elephants. Only one suffers and dies, but can feed an entire village. Reply

Yeah, horse tastes good. If people rode cows around people wouldn't want to eat them either. Reply
