Wandering Gov. Sanford of SC Returning to Work

Share

(Newser) – South Carolina's AWOL governor is expected to be back at work tomorrow, the State reports. Mark Sanford has been incommunicado for several days, save for a fleeting cell phone signal picked up near Atlanta. Aides say he's been hiking on the Appalachian Trail, though his political opponents are skeptical. "I don't believe it, but he said it and that's what I have to accept," a miffed state senator told the Hill. "He owes an explanation as to why he would do this."

Next time, Sanford should keep his cell phone on and let his security detail tag along, said Sen. Jake Knotts. “If he is not willing to do so, he should turn his gubernatorial authority over to the lieutenant governor." Sanford’s wife said her husband took the Father’s Day weekend to get some work done. She didn't know his exact location, either, but said she wasn't concerned. “He was writing something and wanted some space to get away from the kids.”

Given the circumstances and the attention this has garnered, the governor communicated to us that he plans on returning to the office tomorrow. - Joel Sawyer, Sanford spokesman

Colbert: .......... Our congratulations to, Marc Sanford, the janitor of my home state of South Carolina. (aside: I assume he is the janitor for the state capitol building, not the whole state...) On Thursday, he left the work week early and snuck out for a hike getting away from his 'nagging wife and children' and enjoying the great outdoors... Now, I think it's great Mr. Stanford can stand up to his boss and femi-nazi wife (aside: you know she's a democrat :wink ;-) But some in South Carolina thinks he deserves to lose his job because of his proudly unexplained absence. Mr. Sanford, the janitor of the state of South Carolina put them all in their places when he said, "You know, I don't know why they're making a big deal out of this. I just wanted to go hiking naked for Father's Day." (aside: WTF? Must be a political metaphor... anyway...) I really think he might make something of himself someday with those balls. .............. Hold on! (puts hand near ear ... whisper shouting into hand) Are you sure? Press release typos! (Looks up, big voice) Folks, I've just been told Mr. Sanford was not janitor, he was the "governor" of South Carolina. (mutters to self) "Is"? "Was"? (shouts offscreen) What is going on with my script here? Don't any of you know whether Mr. Sanford's employment is in the present or in the past tense? Come on, make a decision! (turns back to camera) Sorry for the digression, folks ;-)

I wonder if what I read at Politico is true. Haven't researched it further yet as I'm still playing catch up on my news due to moving, but a Politico blip says the AP had an article a few days ago that this past Sunday was Naked Hiking Day on the Appalachian Trail. If that's true and Colbert gets a'hold of THAT...omg, omg...lol!
