Ballmer: Old Media Won't Last a Decade

Microsoft boss says papers, TV won't bounce back

(Newser) – The ad revenue media companies lost in the downturn won't be coming back when things turn around, Steve Ballmer told an advertising conference yesterday. The Microsoft boss said the industry has been "reset" at a lower level, and media companies are going to have to learn to survive on less revenue as content continues to move online and traditional media fade, the Guardian reports.

"A recession implies recovery, and for planning purposes I don't think we will. We have reset and won't rebound and re-grow," said Ballmer, who predicted that all content would be online within 10 years. Ballmer warned that a big part of the problem for media companies is their failure, apart from Google, to find models that can generate serious revenue online.

There won't be newspapers, magazines and TV programs. There won't be personal, social communications offline and separate. In 10 years it will all be online. - Steve Ballmer

Some say that the ad-funded model has not led to profitability. Google's search site makes money but past Google is there a publisher with an ad-funded or fee-based model that has made lots of money? No. - Steve Ballmer

We've lost a bunch of theaters in Honolulu in the past decade.

Hooray for the internet where WE choose what to read and watch. Now let's not screw it up by only reading about celebrity sex scandals and only watching videos of idiots getting hit in the groin.

Wasn't the VCR supposed to cause all of the movie theaters to close?
