Nixon: Jews' failure to 'behave themselves' indicated a 'death wish'

(Newser) – Billy Graham blamed Jews from the "Synagogue of Satan" for pornography in a newly released 1973 conversation with Richard Nixon, USA Today reports. The men, in a discussion about anti-Semitism and Jewish opposition to Christian evangelical efforts, agreed that Jews needed to "behave themselves" to avoid unleashing a tide of anti-Semitism.

"It happened in Germany," Nixon told Graham. "Now it’s going to happen in America if these people don’t start behaving. It may be they have a death wish. You know that’s been the problem with our Jewish friends for centuries.” The director of the Anti-Defamation League blasted both men for spouting "age-old classical anti-Semitic canards."

True Republicans..racist, sexist and liars. The sad part of it all. The Party hasn't changed one bit from back then to now. They still believe the same antiquated ideas because it's the party of "whites" and until there is diversity, they will never change. And if they did, they'd be democrats or libertarians. The solution: The Republican Party needs to go away....just like the Tonight Show...they've run their course. It's time to say Goodbye. Reply

Just some insight - I'm by no means an anti-Semite, but understand - 50% of the porn industry is run by Jews. Disproportional when you take into account Jews represent somewhere around 6% of the US population. As for what Graham said, it was nothing short of racism, bigotry and anti-Semitism; utter hypocrisy.

It all started when Lincoln bucked the racism off the Republican Party and pushed to abolish slavery. Though today's Republicans often refer to themselves as the Party of Lincoln, in spirit or reality that has never been true. The Party of Hypocrites, the Party of Denial, or the Party of NO, fits much better. Reply

First of all, the Republican party was antislavery before Lincoln joined it. Second of all, Lincoln was an inveterate racist who was not an abolitionist before the Civil War, but who did, among other things, favor deporting blacks. That said, I agree that "The Party of Hypocrites, the Party of Denial, or the Party of NO, fits much better."

Anything associated with a Christianity has some not-so-very pragmatic social views. For example...views on homosexuality, views on whether non-Christians will cross the same river after life as Christians etc. etc. I respect the concept of religion, but it's failed its followers before and it still is. I don't particularly care what their views are. I just expect them to be consistent. So when they say they're fiscally responsible, I expect them to be fiscally responsible. When they say they have the moral high ground, I expect them to be walking the moral high ground.

Graham was a true republican because he was christian: Christianity is antiquated and anything that comes from it is of course wrong and backwards and bad racist bigoted anti-semitic etc etc ad infanitum. Get a new one please! One can make a case that Billy Graham has done more good for this world than any other American man has. I would disagree with him only on his approach but never on the message of the gospel. When this man dies which will be soon the (world) will lose a wonderful person. He's a typical Southern Baptist. I had a Jewish father and a Southern Baptist mother. I was raised in a small town in rural Oklahoma and grew up in the Baptist Church there . . . no other Jewish people there besides my father and his family. My Sunday School teacher taught us when I was 9 or so that all Jews were evil, having killed Jesus, and were all going to Hell. I think she knew about my parentage, but this is how the Christians were taught back in the early days of the religion -- those Italians who became the leaders of the church couldn't take the blame for what the Romans did in crucifying Jesus, so the Jews were to take the blame for all eternity. In my own life, that was the end of the Baptist Church for me and the end of any organized religion. I knew my Dad and I knew he was a good, honest, moral man and no way was he going to Hell because he was Jewish. I grew up and my mind expanded at 9 years of age. I consider myself very fortunate. I never liked Billy Graham -- his eyes are cold. Reply

Nixon exploited the backlash from passage of the Civil Rights and Voting Acts by LBJ and turned all those racist southern Dems into Republicans-- and that was for the best, given the benefit of hindsight. IMHO

Sorry -- where and when did that occur? I don't remember it at all. And, if you were always on the run from Good Christians who think they have the right to bash your brains in because their Church tells them to, why wouldn't you expect a little name calling right back at you? Were your great-grandparents murdered by a Christian Russian neighbor (who, no doubt, bought something in their store the day before) wielding a bayonet when the Tsar said it was time to get the Jews again? Mine were. Right in front of their 3-year-old daughter hiding under a table -- or she would have been murdered as well. Boo-hoo, poor Christians!
