The couple plans to reconcile, they say

(Newser) – Gov. Mark Sanford is at a South Carolina beach home with his wife and four sons today, his staff tells the AP. The married couple says a reconciliation is in the works despite Sanford’s confession yesterday to a yearlong affair with an Argentinean woman. The Republican—who may also face repercussions for disappearing without transferring his powers—has spent the past two days meeting officials and apologizing to staff.

“I think that South Carolinians, in particular Americans, have tremendous capacity for forgiveness. That said, they can also recognize hypocrisy. I think the tale of the tape will be the next few days, whether or not Gov. Sanford is sincere in his repentance,” says a state senator and longtime friend of Sanford.

as a displaced northern yankee living in this bible belt - the hypocrisy here is unbelievable. the good ole boy network is firmly in place. money buys everything, as does genealogy. cops get away with murder and mayhem against citizens, tom ravenel got a hand slap for coke stuff, meanwhile the average street coke user gets 20+ years for possession. and the angelic sanford will retain his seat as the guv of SC. status quo.

Yes, he should resign as Spitzer did.
