Rangers Rack Up Record 30 Runs

Posted Aug 22, 07 9:33 PM CDT in Sports

(Newser) – The Rangers punished the Orioles 30-3 last night in MLB's first 30-run performance in 110 years, the AP reports. Though short of the big-league record for most runs in a game--Chicago routed Louisville 36-7 on Jun 28, 1897--Texas' mark is the best in American League history. The Rangers' 29 hits were also the most since the Brewers smashed 31 on Aug 28, 1992.

After falling behind 3-0, the last-place Rangers got a dose of offensive magic: Marlon Byrd and Travis Metcalf both hit grand slams, newcomer David Murphy went 5-for-5, and Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Ramon Vasquez blasted two homers apiece. Meanwhile, pitcher Kason Gabbard was better than the Rangers needed, giving up 7 hits in 6 innings.
