Farrah Fawcett's role in Charlie’s Angels made her a TV star, but her 1976 pin-up poster made her an icon. Newsday reveals how the image, which preceded the show by a year, came about. Fawcett, who was supposed to be photographed in a bikini, wore the copper one-piece instead because it concealed a scar. She styled her tousled hair herself, and the Indian blanket in the backdrop came from the photographer’s truck.

“I was a little self-conscious, probably because my smile is so big,” she once said. Nonetheless, the photo—which sold 12 million copies in its first 4 days—was “more ‘me’ than any other photograph out there.” (More Farrah Fawcett stories.)
