Meghan McCain: Leave Mark Sanford Alone

Instead of hypocrisy, troubled GOP must employ compassion

(Newser) – Meghan McCain wants you to forgive Mark Sanford. “I don’t know if it’s the fact that I am younger,” she writes for the Daily Beast, “but it’s of very little concern to me who elected officials sleep with.” Assuming he didn’t do anything illegal, Sanford's infidelity should be between him and his wife. “I know from personal experience the pressure of perfection that is put on politicians and their families.”

What does bother McCain is the hypocrisy, the clips of Sanford attacking Bill Clinton over the Monica Lewinsky affair. “Above all, the Sanford scandal just makes me sad for my party,” she writes. The GOP can’t seem to find a direction, because all its would-be leaders have fallen short. “I suggest that the party concentrate less on what goes on in the bedroom, and more on what is going on in policy.”

You know what's interesting... Liberals on this site seem to hold in higher esteem, fidelity - Juxtaposed to their conservative counterparts. Doesn't that seem a bit odd to anyone? Family values... Where did they go, Megan? The way she's talking, the GOP will soon, one day, turn into one big gigantic human car wash.

I have little problem with the affairs generally. That is why I thought that the attack on Clinton with Monica was such a joke. However I do have a problem with those that blast Clinton telling he should resign and then turn around and do the same. Newt, Ensign and Sanford had no problem with having affairs themselves, but telling Clinton that he should resign. I also have a problem with a Gov that tells everybody that he is going on a hike but actually planned a 10 getaway with his mistress even though after he asked his wife to condone the relationship he went ahead anyway. No one knew where he was and that is wrong. He came back after 5 days trying to be all teary eyed and asking for forgiveness. Sorry but if you are going to preach morals then live morals.
