(Newser) – Rudy Giuliani today got one step closer to maybe announcing a run for New York governor in 2010, the Daily News reports. The former NYC mayor and Republican presidential candidate explained his position to CNN. “I’m thinking about it,” he said. “I don’t know if I’m at the point of seriously considering it. It’s a little too early.”

The state GOP has apparently given Giuliani a deadline of early fall to decide. A survey shows Giuliani faring well against current Gov. David Patterson in a general election, Politico adds—52%-34%. But if state attorney general Andrew Cuomo was the Democratic nominee, the study finds, Giuliani would fall 51%-39%.

I was born and raised in NY, and I remember early on seeing my dad chase a robber away as he tried to mug my mother in a parking lot. But as I got older, the city steadily got safer and the Times Square of today pretty much wouldn't be as great as it is now without his leadership. And I know people say Giuliani dropped 9/11 too often, but he really did a good job in keeping morale up in those times. So although people hold that against him, I still support the guy.

As least in the NY gubernatorial debates he won't have to contend with Ron Paul.

I think the firefighters, policemen and women, and the volunteers who actually did the search and rescue and clean-up should be the ones running for Governor.
