Beck, Drudge Blast Obama for... Opposing a Coup?

It's yet another way the president's a commie

(Newser) – Glenn Beck found a new and creative way of insinuating that President Obama is a commie last night, attacking him for—of all things—opposing the military coup in Honduras. See, Hugo Chavez and Fidel Castro also opposed the coup, which means clearly any right-thinking non-pinko would support it. “That’s Glenn Beck logic in action for you,” an incredulous Cajun Boy blogs for Gawker.

Could the Fox News meme become a new conservative talking point? Maybe. The Drudge Report banner at roughly the same time read, “OBAMA LASHES OUT AT HONDURAS; SIDES WITH CHAVEZ, CASTRO.” It was soon gone, though, replaced with a hilarious and equally hard-hitting headline you can see by clicking the "Images" tab at left.

Dammit! Now my authentic reason with disagreeing with Obama on this issue is overshadowed by Beck's stupidity. This is not a military "coup"-- the government wasn't overthrown and the military isn't installing a military dictator, as the classic definition of "coup" goes. The military acted with the blessing of the Honduran Congress and Supreme Court-- and removed a dangerous leader that was not responding to the checks and balances on his power. The constitution of Honduras was the winner in this conflict-- and now Beck is going to make this issue into a joke. I'm furious. Reply

That said-- Obama is NOT a communist and is not in cahoots with Castro or Chavez-- he is misunderstanding the motivation and legitimacy of the Honduran military action last Sunday.

I believe the president of Honduras was democratically elected? This whole coup seems to have resulted from a *non-binding* referendum the president proposed. Using that as an excuse to overthrow the president seems fishy to me.

You're mistaken. The president not only had usurped the authority of his Congress and Supreme Court by pushing these referendums forward, he fired military officials for standing in his way and led a mob to a military base to reclaim his ballots-- there was not need to make excuses to out him from office.

I do think it was a coup (although a civilized one for that matter). He did break the law, but there was no trial. The president is not above the law but he isn't below it either. I simply cannot accept a president being suddenly forced to exile, even if he was going in the direction of Hugo Chavez (and I do think he was). If we accept that "under certain circumstances" it is alright to remove a leader, then there will be no stopping any opposition congress from choosing their own president.

Thank you pigburn. You have brought up the actual debate in this issue. I feel that the Honduran congress was justified in their outing of Zaleya because of his willingness to ignore congressional decree and take action on his own. That's just me, though. Thanks for seeing through the sensationalism in this story and actually discussing the real issues.

I'm afraid that a political conflict in Japan didn't spark the bombing at Pearl Harbor. We had a genuine interest in stopping the Third Reich in Europe and we didn't address it. We have no interest in getting involved in Honduras. Appeasement and allowing other countries their sovereignty are two separate things.

The constitution of Honduras dictates the line of succession following the president, and that's the guy that's being installed. Stop sensationalizing this issue Beck. Beck and the Drudge Report are like Hilter and his paper. Feed misleading information to those under educated or greedy individuals and they will follow you. Beck, Limbaugh, Rove, Bush,.....Druge Report, Newsmax.....they are all a part of the same propiganda circle. Almost "commie" by their own right.
