2 More Injured at Ground Zero Building

Posted Aug 23, 07 3:15 PM CDT in US

(Newser) – Two New York firefighters were injured today by scaffolding falling from the Deutsche Bank building near ground zero, the AP reports. The incident came less than a week after a fire at the skyscraper across the street from the World Trade Center site claimed the lives of two other firefighters. WNBC reports that today's victims sustained serious head injuries.

Crews had been removing toxic debris from the building, but demolition work had been suspended since Saturday’s blaze. The contractor overseeing the job, John Galt Corp., has been dismissed after reports surfaced of its many safety violation citations. Meanwhile, city officials acknowledged that the fire department had not been regularly inspecting the building.
