Turtles Shut Down NYC Runway

Share

(Newser) – Mating season came to a speedy end for some turtles who strayed onto a runway at New York's JFK airport yesterday, the New York Post reports. After a pilot told air control he had  run over some turtles on his way to take-off, wildlife workers shut down the runway for 35 minutes and moved the remaining 78 diamondback turtles back to the wild. The resulting delays slowed air traffic to a crawl for 90 minutes.

Wildlife officials suspect the turtles who wandered onto a runway at JFK airport were seeking mates.

I'm wondering does anybody know if there are any conservation groups who are looking out for this turtle breed at JFK? It seems this happens all the time and I'm shocked, do the rescuers put them back where they came from or do they help them onto the final destination where I presume they want to lay eggs? I hope it's the latter because if they are put back where they started from surely they just try again to reach their breeding grounds and risk being killed again. Any info appreciated, Thanks. Reply
