How Baron Cohen Might Follow Brüno

Share

(Newser) – Sacha Baron Cohen is box-office gold, but he can’t pull it off again … or can he? Eric Ditzian looks at some possibilities for the Brüno star’s future.

  • "A Fourth Wacked-Out Journalist." Some thought Brüno couldn't fly after the exposure Borat brought, but the multiplex says otherwise. "No doubt, Cohen and his mischievous team could make a fourth movie work." (First film Ali G Indahouse didn't make it to US theaters.)

  • Actually acting. Cohen could follow in other comic actors' footsteps and seek serious roles: "Cohen has impressive acting chops—how else doesn't he crack up during his absurd exchanges with his unwitting interview subjects?"
  • Sketch comedy. The tube is sadly lacking in ambitious shows lately: "Ever since Dave Chappelle bailed on his Comedy Central show in 2005, the small screen has been missing a wildly creative comic chameleon who can deliver raunchy and provocative laughs once a week."
  • Rock star. "He could create an entirely new musical persona, record an album and go out on the road," Ditzian writes. "Maybe even shoot a faux-documentary about the whole experience. If Joaquin Phoenix might be attempting something similar, why can't Cohen?"

There is one scene in the movie—when Brüno loses custody of his adopted child and breaks down hysterically in tears—that is genuinely, surprisingly touching. - Eric Ditzian, on Cohen's chops in Bruno

I know I am fckin old but I honestly do miss the days gone by when a comedy was a REAL COMEDY! I even miss the "Roasts" when every other word wasn't something your mom would wash your mouth out for and then wash your dads mouth out for teaching you to say it. I do miss those times when one comedian didn't try and out do another comedian by stooping to a new low in being totally vulgar and thinking that was funny. Now we have mindless dribble such as this exposing people at weak moments and filming it, selling tickets and when you leave the show, you have learned not one thing other than people are always dumb and if you approach it correctly you can laugh without paying for a ticket. The word you're looking for is drivel, old timer; dribble is what you do when you're gumming down your mush while sitting in your recliner watching reruns of the Flintstones. Sorry, reader. Couldn't resist. How do you feel about Stephen Colbert?
