An apparently harried congressional aide picked the wrong woman to threaten with police action, Fox News reports. Marianne Stringer, widow of a Vietnam veteran, was petitioning congressmen to oppose a decrease in benefits for veterans’ spouses. When she politely emailed the office of a reticent lawmaker, the aide shot back with accusations of harassment and wrote he would “report your name and address to the Capitol Police.”

The aide also reminded Stringer who her congressman was. “I know who my congressman is,” she says. And he does, too. “My staff knows that one of the ways to submit their resignation is to say we can’t help if you’re in someone else’s district,” says GOP Rep. Bill Posey. The office of the offending representative, Republican Mac Thornberry, says the aide’s remarks “are in no way reflective of the culture of this office,” but would not comment on his “future with this office.” (More Gold Star Wives of America stories.)
