Record 10% of US Convicts Serving Life

Share

(Newser) – Almost 10% of prisoners incarcerated in the US are serving life sentences, an all-time high, the New York Times reports. In California, which maintains the nation’s highest prison population, that number is 20%, says a report from the Sentencing Project, a group that wants to eliminate life-without-parole sentences. Two-thirds of those serving life sentences are black or Latino—in New York, for example, just 16.3% of lifers are white. And even those eligible for parole are unlikely to get the chance.

“When California courts sentence somebody to life with parole, it turns out that’s not possible after all,” a professor says. “Board of parole hearings almost never grant releases.” And though the public is softening on nonviolent crime, it appears to be staunchly hardline when it comes to violence. “They’re not willing to do anything different for violent offenders,” the professor says.

how many of these sentences are for violent crime? NY and CA don't have the death penalty, which would take care of some of these people. The question is how many are in for three strikes offesnes or non-violent drug offenses, that could be released. www.prisonlegalnews.org has a good article about the juveniles serving life without parole as well, and it touches on the recidivism rate of older offenders (which they state is less then 2%) which kind of goes with getting rid of life sentences all together. Blacks and Hispanics perpetrate more crimes per capita than whites--why do they insist on making this out to be some kind of racist conspiracy? Reply

You seemed to have missed one VERY IMPORTANT factor: ECONOMICS. Crime follows poverty. PERIOD. There just happened to be MORE impoverished black, latin, and other 'ethnic minorities' members of our society. You question why do THEY -not sure if you're talking about blacks, hispanics, or whites when you say THEY- insist on making racial conspiracies, yet your first sentence is base on race, not economics. While studying those 'per-capita' numbers, did you bother to see how DENSELY POPULATED the areas were where blacks and hispanics committed more crimes? Here's a hint, housing projects and other governement-assisted housing like the many HERE IN CHICAGO, contain MANY MORE (impoverished)? people PER SQUARE MILE than some rich suburban well-to-do area. Notice I made not ONE MENTION of race, pure economics. Learn something some day instead of wanting to believe that Jim Crow-era nonsense. You hear we've been to the Moon since then also. Wake up!!!
