US Missile Kills Son of Bin Laden

Officials think drone strike hit him in Pakistan

(Newser) – The US is pretty sure that an American missile killed Osama bin Laden's son in Pakistan, reports NPR. Spy agencies are "80 to 85%" certain that a missile from a US drone killed Saad bin Laden, thought to be in his late 20s, sometime in the last year. Saad bin Laden was active in al-Qaeda but not a major figure. "We make a big deal out of him because of his last name," says a counterterrorism official.

Those who think this sort of thing is getting us anywhere should listen to today's Talk of the Nation broadcast. As the war in Iraq heads into its ninth year, President Obama has begun sending more troops to Afghanistan and widening the US incursion into Pakistan. Boston University professor Andrew Bacevich, a retired Army lieutenant colonel, argues ( as he did In a recent op-ed for the Los Angeles Times) that President Obama's "strategic blindness" is perpetuating the war launched by George W. I agree with you absolutely. I cannot for the life of me understand why he feels the need to extend our presence in Afghanistan. It could turn out to be one of the biggest blunders of his presidency.
