Reactions mixed on gallery exhibit

(Newser) – An exhibit at Scotland’s Gallery of Modern Art intended to “reclaim the Bible as a sacred text” did not go entirely as planned, the Telegraph reports. Visitors were invited to “write your way back into” the Bible on display, and the resulting additions ranged from the angry—“This is all sexist pish”—to the silly—“The Gospel According to Luke Skywalker.”

A local church that offers “inclusive Christian ministry to the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered communities” dreamed up the idea, but a minister was not amused. “The Bible should never be used like that,” she says. One of the artists who created the exhibition counters, “If we are to open up the Bible for discussion, surely we have to invite people to speak out.”

I'm a bit conflicted about this. While I don't really believe in the Bible, I do have the utmost respect for people of faith. And yet, it's a book written by people, for people and these comments (and I'm sure there must be some good ones not just these ones they've obviously quoted for shock value) reflect our society now as the words written in the Bible reflect the society back then. Reply

Tim and Texas, I have to agree with you two. Although, I personally don't have any problem with the "art" aspect. I mean, if people want to do that to the Bible, let them. If there IS a God, which is what I believe, then it's between them and Him, if not, then it's still freedom of expression. Tim hit the nail on the head: Try this with the Qur'an, and I'm sure this would be a differently reported story, and there would be a different reaction.

@keybored: Thank you very much. I feel the same about most of the folks on here. RobertDada, NutsinNY, Kokuaguy to name a few, and yourself. There are a few in here that are just routinely nasty, hostile and foul mouthed (right and left) that sometimes try my nerves, but overall the whole point of forums like this is to have healthy debate. I could go to a right wing, or very right wing site and we could all agree, or I can come here, get different opinions, and possibly learn something. That is what makes us all better people, reguardless of political slant.

@Paul 123 -- Not to get all Kumbaya or anything... ;) , but that's exactly why I appreciate your being here. I'm here for exactly the same thing: to learn and debate with others, especially those who hold different points of view. That doesn't mean I'll change my mind necessarily, but I may learn a few things and have an interesting discussion. I just wish others would be more like you rather than seemingly here just to cause trouble and be hateful. They make it difficult not get involved in petty arguments, which in frustration, I'm sometimes guilty of too.

The bible has taken an unfair beating thanks to fundies and dogmatic religious folk. Yes, there are atrocities written about within it, but it also contains some beautiful verse as well as some great philosophical messages that are missed by the majority. And KB is right; it was written by people, not with a great Quill from the sky. Also, most people are not aware of how it came to be. Read up on the Nicean Council and learn how your bible was edited by the men in power at the time and how so many wonderful books were left out due to a debate amongst these men on how & what christianity was going to be. An excellent account of how the New Testament, in its present form came to be, is a book by Bart D. Ehrman, titled "Misquoting Jesus".

the bible is a inspiration from God written by man for our edification. It tells you the beginning (past), the present (today) and the future. The smart people know and understand the word Prov1:7 in the bible.......the Qu'ran is a written work of a Arab prince in the 6th century.......you have three groups of people out there: those who believe in a God, those who don't believe in any God and those who believe that Christ is God with them (Matt1:23) are called Christians. Christians believe what is written in the bible. Inclusive Christian Ministry should read: Non-inclusive Ministry because a knowing Christian doesn't believe in homosexulaity which is written in the bible. This is a stupid idea by stupid people thinking they know something about being a Christian.....those who marked up the bible, it will cost them in the end........ Reply

snarfeh, some of the old testament laws dont apply any more since the coming of Jesus. Your refer to the Levitical laws, I believe, that had to do with cleansing rituals prior and atonement. Christ's coming cancelled out the need to follow those laws. If you need me i'll be putting my lobster bib on!

Paul...only *some* OT laws don't apply anymore? lol! And who, might I ask, is the arbiter of which old law is discarded and which one is tossed about like a salad? Leviticus is thrown out quite a bit regarding homosexuality. You cannot pick and choose which OT laws are still valid and which are not and expect everyone else to adhere to your choices. Either they are all obsolete or none are. The OT is not a cherry tree.

People do discuss the Bible (and all other religious texts) rigorously, people argue and revise it all the time. It's been translated and rewritten only a near infinite number of times. And, yeah, it was written by people, even what's believed to be the word of God (or what-have-you) was penned by some John Doe. So from ancient biblical times, filtered through the ages to right now, who's to say there was no artistic intent in the original? Who's to say there was no humour? Maybe Jesus was just the Luke Skywalker of his time. Silliness isn't a crime yet is it? Reply
