Blogosphere Reinventing Journalism, Not Bleeding It

Share

(Newser) – The blogosphere might not be the future of news sprung fully formed from the corpse of old media, Michael Massing writes in the New York Review of Books, but neither is it “parasite” feeding on newspapers. “The practice of journalism, far from being leeched by the Web, is being reinvented there, with a variety of fascinating experiments in the gathering, presentation, and delivery of news.”

Massing praises the efforts of bloggers who have been doing an increasingly good job of breaking stories. During recent Iran protests, he was checking Andrew Sullivan’s Daily Dish and CNN simultaneously. “Sullivan, sitting at his computer, outperformed CNN’s entire global network.” Sure, the partisanship of most bloggers can make the Web feel like “an ideological wind tunnel,” but “it’s their willingness to dispense with such conventions that makes the blogosphere a lively and bracing place.”

Just as the advent of printing helped break the medieval Church's hold on the flow of information, so is the rise of the Internet loosening the grip of the corporate-owned mass media.

Unfortunately, the blogosphere started at the beginning with broadsheets and yellow journalism. Hopefully, it will develop and mature to real and honest journalism. Reply

I think you'll find more 'real' 'honest' journalism on the web than you will any cable/network news source. Too many news brokers are in it for profit now, not journalism. True some of what you get on the net you have to take with a grain of salt and 'consider the source' particularly where politics is concerned. But when it comes to human stories; earthquakes in China, street protests in Iran, the fate of street children in Brazil. No one does those better than the internet. The speed and unfiltered emotions that hit the blogs are amazing and unparalleled. Not to mention the lack of 'PC-Polish' which is a welcomed change. Sure some of the grammar is wretched and the language a bit rough, but if you can't handle those things, stick with CNN and Fox.

Let's just wait and see. I'm part of the flotsam and jetsum of print media's decline. And yet, I find hope "here." Reply
