(Newser) – Otty Sanchez, the Texas 33-year-old who confessed to stabbing, decapitating, skinning, and eating portions of her newborn son, had been diagnosed with schizophrenia and postpartum psychosis before Sunday’s slaying, the San Antonio Express-News reports. She’s been charged with capital murder, and is currently in hospital under 24-hour surveillance. The baby’s father says he wants her to “pay the ultimate price.”

“She was a sweet person and I still love her,” says Scott Buchholz, but “she needs to be put to death for what she has done.” But relatives hope authorities take Sanchez’s mental condition into account. “You can still be prosecuted if you have some form of mental illness,” said an assistant district attorney. “The test is if you understand the difference between right and wrong.”

@ Alan_Harrington, 1: that is without doubt one of the most racist comments I have seen here of late, get over yourself. 2: If indeed this woman has been diagnosed with Schizophrenia she with most likely be locked away the rest of her life in a Texas mental institution as a Doctor would have little trouble showing the acts with which she has been charged are not the acts of a rational mind. The system failed this woman and this child both, she was allowed to go undiagnosed and untreated while having a child within her care. What we really need to ask is where they heel was the so called "safety Net" that supposedly exists in this country to catch people falling in such a manner, perhaps some of the misplaced anger might be that this case shows the Medical Safety Net does not exist for the poor, only for the ones lucky enough to work and have insurance...if they can still afford it. .

It's disgusting to see how people react to a mentally ill woman who has just given birth. She was diagnosed with a debilitating, hideous condition only brought on by hormonal imbalance due to pregnancy and giving birth. Where were the doctors who diagnosed her? Why wasn't she in the hospital? Where was her family? Everyone failed that baby, yet the mother is the only one who gets the punishment. Reply

Yes, the system, her family and herself failed that baby horribly and there probably will be some legislature to prevent this from happening again. As far as shared punishment goes, I hate to be the one to state it, but SHE ATE PARTS OF HER BABY!!!! She obviously was concerned enough to get a diagnosis, but unwiling to seek treatment. She could have surrendered her child when the voices told her to hurt him. She could have called for help, left him at a grocery store or a bus stop. She didn't do that. I had PPD, PTSD and OCD after I had my son. Its hard and crippling, but I didn't and wouldn't hurt my baby.

she ate her baby, it seems like the baby has it worse than the crazy ass mother. she should be punished, by death. god bless texas for still getting rid of the worthless trash instead of just putting them into the system for the rest of their lives. i have no issues with my tax dollars going to that, but there is a problem with her getting three squares a day, and all the medication it takes to numb her out and be a zombie locked in some room. she skinned and ate her baby, that should be the point when the help stops.

CK--you made an excellent point--as you often do (too bad the majority here are so clueless). There are thousands of people who should be in institutions, but because of the "reforms" brought about by liberalism they are living in government-subsidized rentals, cardboard boxes and dumpsters, living on the fringe of society. I worked for the state at one time, with a team of professionals who went out to babysit some of the more f'd up people living in our community. Some of these people have no business being in society, and yet--there they are: drugged up, delusional, psychotic, spreading AIDs, molesting (and sometimes eating) children. Ah, the fruits of liberalism...

One wonders whether the child's suffering was any more extreme than that of the children who were drowned when their mother locked then in her car and sent it to the bottom of a lake. Or the five children who were drowned one by one by thier mother in the family's bath tub? So....the Community Mental Health Act was intended to increase care for the mentally ill. But the individual states used loopholes to dump the mentally ill on the streets without any care.
