Otty Sanchez, the Texas 33-year-old who confessed to stabbing, decapitating, skinning, and eating portions of her newborn son, had been diagnosed with schizophrenia and postpartum psychosis before Sunday’s slaying, the San Antonio Express-News reports. She’s been charged with capital murder, and is currently in hospital under 24-hour surveillance. The baby’s father says he wants her to “pay the ultimate price.”

“She was a sweet person and I still love her,” says Scott Buchholz, but “she needs to be put to death for what she has done.” But relatives hope authorities take Sanchez’s mental condition into account. “You can still be prosecuted if you have some form of mental illness,” said an assistant district attorney. “The test is if you understand the difference between right and wrong.” (More Otty Sanchez stories.)
