FDA Warns Against Steroid-Laced Supplements

Share

(Newser) – The FDA has issued a serious warning urging consumers to steer clear of bodybuilding supplements advertised as containing steroid-like substances, the Los Angeles Times reports. The products are unapproved drugs, not dietary supplements as claimed, and adverse effects include kidney failure and major liver damage, officials warn.

"Products marketed for bodybuilding and claiming to contain steroids or steroid-like substances are illegal and potentially quite dangerous,” an official said. “The FDA is taking enforcement action today to protect the public.”  The warning follows an FDA raid last week on the home of the chief of a company making bodybuilding supplements, and on an outlet of the Max Muscle chain of sports nutrition stores.

Tren Xtreme and Mass Xtreme, from American Cellular Labs, are among the products covered by the FDA warning.

They are not dietary supplements, but instead are unapproved new drugs that have not been reviewed by the FDA for safety and effectiveness.

This is exactly the thing I've been looking for; I have the FDA to thank for helping to identify it. I can't seem to put on any weight and very little muscle when I work out, and I doubt some traces of steroids would hurt an otherwise healthy individual; look at the loads of steroid intake taken in by pro athletes. Anybody disagree I would appreciate the feedback; being nasty or name-calling probably won't help. Reply

No no no. These are not purported to contain "a little" bit of steroids; they are said to contain "steroid-like" substances. Think of melamine and other unregulated substances that kill pets and blow out your kidneys. If you want to check further, find out exactly what is inside these, research that substance, and stick with one brand. Even then, they're unregulated. The formula may change next week and you WILL be eating melamine, tiger penis, C11H24O13, etc.

Do you use whey protein as a recovery drink? My husband lifts and we always have whey in the house. I've noticed that the extra protein helps me, too.
