(Newser) – The fallout from the Henry Louis Gates arrest continues: A Boston cop has been suspended for referring to Gates as a "jungle monkey" in an email, the Globe reports. Officer Justin Barrett, 36, faces a disciplinary hearing next week and could be fired. He used the phrase while describing media coverage of the arrest to members of the National Guard. The flap comes a day before Gates and arresting officer James Crowley have beers at the White House.

"Commissioner Davis was made aware that Officer Barrett was the author of correspondence which included racially charged language," said a department spokeswoman. "At that time, (he) immediately stripped Officer Barrett of his gun and badge."

for what it's worth jay, i agree with you. they all three stepped over some lines - gates didnt need to fly off the handle, crowley didnt need to arrest him for it, and obama should not have said anything, much less the "stupidly" comment and i wish everyone would drop it already.

Most of my comments are designed to point out the hypocrisy of political correctness. Racism exists on both sides of the aisle and my contention would be that some minority groups are actually worse at perpetuating violence and hate than whites where the rubber meets the road. I know that I anger people here, and I wouldn't have it any other way--I enjoy the banter. The difference is, when I bump up against an opposing view, I try to spark debate rather than shutting it down. But hey, if that's how they wanna play in the sandbox, meh.

First of all, there's nothing hypocritical about political correctness. Political correctness is just another way of saying politeness. Second of all, it's perfectly understandable, to my mind, for a black, Hispanic, or other minority to be wary of or feel a certain fear of whites, given the monstrous history of both legally sanctioned and otherwise unredressed white-on-minority crime in this country. On the other hand, it's perfectly illegitimate for whites--who themselves have or whose ancestors perpetrated those crimes--to entertain any stereotypes about minorities, for three reasons. One: It's those same unfounded white stereotypes of minorities which provoked and undergirded all those white-on-minority crimes. Two: Minority-on-white crimes so pale in comparison to white-on-minority crimes in historical length, scale, and degree--especially when you take into account how few, if any, minority-on-white crimes have gone unredressed--that stereotypes about minorities have little to no relation to fact, as opposed to minorities' justified fear of the majority whites. Third: If a given minority individual fits a given aspect of the white stereotype--e.g., has committed a crime--that crime's roots can almost invariably be traced back to a white-on-minority crime. So for a white person to hold a stereotype against a minority is like a bully pushing a nerd into a pile of manure, then blocking that nerd's access to a shower, then mocking that nerd for smelling like shit.

I think I've figured out why I am being accused by C_k and Jester of being the evil force behind newser's initiative to "sanitize" the site (my word). About a week ago I noticed a trend to "flag" C_k's comments (I think the technical term is "de-emphasize" them) and I started to complain about it. Out of frustration I went on the essays of Michael Wolff published "below the grid" and made a plea for a method of settling disputes over thinkgs like flagging, "abuse" as defined by the newser Comment Policy, and newser policies in general. Partly being cheeky and partly in seriousness I offered to be a newser "ombudsperson" and to do it voluntarily without pay, and to withdraw from making any further comments in the story forum pages which I enjoy doing and which has become something of an addiiction for me. Within a couple of days out of the blue I got an email from "Brittany" at newser to join a discussion about "infractions" at the newser facebook page and I happily did so. One of the first things I did there was to ask if Corona_king had been invited to participate, and Brittany said that C_k had. Well, to make a long and somewhat boring strory at least not "endless", I have been taking part in a very interesting discussion (to me) for several days now, and in the beginning some of my most heart felt posts contained defenses of troll-like behavior by C_k (and others)-- they were was pretty strong. However, as time passed and none of the right wingers seemed to be showing up to defend themselves, my interest in protecting their "free speech rights" has waned. Newser is after all a profit making venture and that is the bottom line. This is not the town square, or even the public airwaves where every blowhard has the right to call Rush and drool and bleat to her/his heart's content about Hawaiian birth certificates, etc. And as Shonongreg said simply and truthfullly: "Avatars are not real people."

Have you been invited to join the facebook discussion about newser's flagging policy, Jester? If so, you have not joined in and identified yourself by your username. newser seems to want to sanitize the discussions here in order to prevent nubies from being scared away. The bottom line for newser is profit, and rightly so. My point has been if there is going to be strict enforcement of a ZERO-TOLERANCE policy, the ground rules need to be very clear to all. At different times, C_k has been banned and then apparently allowed back "on probation" (present status unclear.) My question: in what way are your posts any different in nature and pervasiveness from C_k's?

kg, please don't act like "newser" is the only one that wants to "sanitize the discussions." You have time and again gotten on my case for calling someone something like "a pissdrinking horsefucker," or telling someone to something along the lines of "teabag a pair of grenades," or what have you. You find these kinds of phrases and sentiments offensive. But I've rarely, if ever, used them except in response to something that offended me deeply. For example, I think that someone saying that he "would like to have happen to [Mike Vick] what he did to those dogs and other 'family pets' as articles have quoted," is far more vile than calling that same someone "a steaming pile of dogshit." You may not agree with me, and of course you're free not to, but I'd appreciate it if you got off everyone's case. I can't fucking stand Jayster999, but I don't think he should be banned. An "Ignore this user" feature would be a boon, though. That way I could ignore Jayster999, and you could ignore me.

anch, I'm glad you posted this here. I'm not sure there's an effort by the newser editors to "sanitize", but some of the users here are pushing strongly for it. The number who refuse to particiapte in the discussions because of C_k is not insignificant, apparently. I wish you were taking part in the discsussions on the Facebook page -- sounds like they will have served their purpose soon and we'll see what new changes the overlords have in store for us on Monday. My thesis in my last "lecture" to you was that you weaken your arguments by the use of excessive insults and what borders on "hate speech." I laffed my ass off here at your post and those colorful terms are not always inappropriate and are sometimes absolutely perfect. All I'm asking is that you be more discriminating. You see, the truth is, I care about you and I defended you very strongly on the Facebook forum, and then the last exchange that I objected to just seemed to cut the legs out from under the argument I was making on your behalf. My fear is that you will be put in the same category as C_K and that would be a shame if it were to happen.

I agree about the "mob rule" aspect arising, armywife, but the liberals are no more likely to flag posts; there are just more liberal posters here. Some of my posts seem to automatically get 4 or 5 thumbs down no matter how reasonable what I say is, so there is a core of rightists here who do automatically mod down comments that are liberal or at least the ones from me. .......... Personally I don't give "thumbs down"s due to agreement or disagreement. I give them due to the quality of the post. I will mod up posts I disagree with if the comment is well expressed and well reasoned. I only mod up a third to half of my own posts even. ........ And CK and jayster, in my mind, deserve to be targeted because of the way they express themselves. CK is hardly even worth mentioning. His posts are patently insincere. He is only a troll. Jayster is more complicated; he just seems to be far right. He does drop to insults far, far too often. Anchower does the same thing on the liberal side. I flag all those comments. If the insults gradually arise. I don't flag. If someone responds to simple criticism with an insult, I flag. .................................. I have a proposal for all. ........................ We should stop giving thumbs down's to posts we disagree with and reserve our thumbs for quality. And if you give a thumbs down to a post, then don't reply to it. Let your words of disagreement express your disapproval. shonangreg: I liked Newser a lot better before they introduced the thumbing. It serves absolutely no legitimate purpose--all it does is inflame people--and they should get rid of it. Freedom of speech can only go so far, but when it involves insensitive comment to another race, in this case African American who have been slaves in this country for hundreds of years, still in the 1960's in their shameful past that they have been through, bitten by dogs, water hose down by the police and so many other things, because they were regarded as animals not human, that's one of the reason they were treated as such. Insensitive comments regarding another race without looking at their shameful past is just plain stupidity and is not call freedom of speech, it is called hate speech. Reply

I actually remember Kindergarten; it was unique in that we all seemed to be the same race. I haven't given away that original mindset, but mingling with others since, who learned to carry on a torch of hatred from family has made me aware that such behavior is a learned process which we can resist if we try.

Gee anchower, if you really think through what a cop might be up against when entering the house of a suspected 2 person break-in, maybe you'd be a little more open minded. There are all kinds of reasons why the police need to get some sort of control in this situation. Cops end up dying when they don't follow protocol and protocol DOES leave some room for judgement (supported by all other police officers at the scene). Reply
