White House Invites CEOs for Lunch—Then Bills Them

(Newser) – Four top CEOs who sat down to lunch with President Obama at the White House have an unusual memento: the bill for their meals. White House staffers collected the credit card numbers of the executives from Coke, Xerox, AT&T, and Honeywell so they could pay up afterward, Politico reports. The White House says it wanted to avoid any conflicts of interest and will continue the practice at future meetings. No word on the menu.

“I’m sure they have their political reasons for doing that, but I think it’s not what quote, hospitality, unquote is all about,” says Letitia Baldrige, who ran Jackie O's staff. "We’ve got to relax about this." A former Bush official says no such billing took place in the previous White House, but another adds that Bush was so sensitive about being seen with CEOs that he doesn't think any ate lunch there.

From time to time, White House guests are asked to reimburse for their meals, the reasons include ensuring there is no conflict or appearance of a conflict. That is consistent with our tough ethics rules. - White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki

Jack up the price by 10,000% and invite every CEO in the country. Imagine the money we would raise to pay for health care reform.

No doubt, but wouldn't it be lovely if the IRS audited these particular expenses and questioned them? Never happen, but a fun thought, nonetheless....

Agreed, Rob...that was not a comment for the reporting of abuse...thumbs down, sure, but it should not have been flagged. And I don't think Newser literally flagged it as inappropriate. Their system probably did it once a reader or readers reported it as abuse. I will thumb down some comments with which I don't agree, but I have yet to report anyone for abuse. It's almost like being a tattletale or whiny or something. Hell, I'll thumb up a comment with which I don't agree if I think it's thoughtfully made or it's really funny...
