'Swine Flu Ship' Docks In France

France, Belgium see first swine flu deaths

(Newser) – A cruise ship carrying 60 crew members diagnosed with swine flu and 70 more showing symptoms has docked in southern France, the BBC reports. The infected will receive onboard treatment in Villefranche-sur-Mer. French officials say Spanish authorities confirmed the diagnosis, but Royal Caribbean, which owns the Voyager of the Seas, denied that report. The cruise line said it tested 64 people for influenza A, of which H1N1 is a strain, and found no infection, Reuters adds.

(NEWSER) - Foxy Brown does not have a good track record when it comes to beauty salons. The rapper was kicked off a Royal Caribbean cruise over a nail-related meltdown, TMZ reports. Brown, who had performed the day before the incident, showed up three hours late to a manicure appointment on the ship last Monday and then freaked out when the salon couldn't accommodate her. She was removed by security and remained in her room, under supervision, for two days. As soon as the ship docked in the Cayman Islands, authorities gave her the boot and she was forced to fly home. (NEWSER) - The H1N1 swine flu virus has reemerged in Egypt, infecting 1,172 people and killing 56 since Oct. 8, Reuters reports. Some 16,373 have been infected in the country, with 281 deaths, since it was first reported there in June 2009. Egyptian officials last year culled all pigs, shut schools, and stopped sick travelers at airports. Worldwide, 18,450 have died from the virus, says the World Health Organization. More»

French Assembly Votes to Ban Burka

European nations lining up in crackdown

(NEWSER) - The French National Assembly has voted nearly unanimously to ban the burka in public, and the Senate is expected to do the same in a matter of weeks. France will likely become the second European nation after Belgium to crack down on the Islamic garb. Similar bills are also pending in Spain and Italy. The bill, which passed the Assembly 335 to 1, would fine women who wear face-covering veils $200, or require them to attend citizenship classes, or both. Husbands who insist the veils be worn in public could face up to a year in prison and a $38,000 fine. More»
