(NEWSER) - The British newspaper arm of Rupert Murdoch's media empire has reached settlements with 36 alleged victims of the News Corp phone hacking scandal. Politicians, a soccer player, and actor Jude Law are among those who settled out of court, for amounts ranging from $40,000 to $200,000 plus legal fees, the New York Times reports. There are 60 claims from alleged victims—and nearly 6,000 potential victims—and 10 of those who did not settle are seeking court trials starting next month. More»

But Mariah Yeater's lawyers blow off statutory rape worries

(NEWSER) - The 20-year-old California woman claiming to be Justin Bieber's babymama could be investigated for having sex with the underage singer. Mariah Yeater has filed a paternity suit against the boy crooner, claiming he had sex with her backstage last year at an LA concert when he was just 16. Yeater is asking a court to order Bieber to take a paternity test and to financially support her 3-month-old son. But Yeater could also be investigated herself for breaking the law by having sex with a minor. Yeater's paternity suit apparently alleges that the backstage encounter only lasted 30 seconds and took place in a bathroom, the Telegraph reports. (NEWSER) - The Biebs recently said he wants to be a dad , and that might already be the case. A woman who boasts of a backstage quickie with Justin Bieber has filed a paternity suit against the singer. Californian Mariah Yeater, 20, claims that she and Bieber, then a jailbait 16, had sex at the LA Staples Center after one of his concerts a year ago when she was 19. It was a "brief" coupling, Bieber's first time, and he refused to wear a condom, Yeater said in an affidavit . She now has a three-month-old baby boy, and is asking a court to order Bieber to take a paternity test and financially support her son, reports the New York Post . More»
