Pig-Hunting Dog Pack Mauls NZ Jogger

(Newser) – A woman needed nine hours of surgery after being attacked by a pack of eight dogs as she jogged on New Zealand's North Island, the BBC reports. She curled into a fetal position during the 15-minute attack, a move doctors say saved her life. The dogs were eventually beaten off by their owner and the woman's husband. The pig-hunting dogs have been destroyed with the consent of their owner, who faces criminal charges in the attack.

A new report tallies 75 shark attacks around the world in 2011, and notes that fatalities reached 16%. That's double the percentage of shark attack deaths in 2010; for the past decade, the fatalities have averaged less than 7%, LiveScience reports. More»

(NEWSER) - A 6-year-old Texas boy survived an attack by a hungry mountain lion in Big Bend National Park. The boy was walking with his family when the animal pounced, leaving him with puncture wounds and scratches, AP reports. The mountain lion tried to attack another family, but was fended off with a backpack. The animal—described by both families as young, small, and malnourished—is being hunted with a team of dogs, and will be killed if found. Parts of the west Texas park were evacuated after the attack. (NEWSER) - Lydia Ko is just 14 years old, but that didn't stop her from becoming the youngest ever winner of a professional golf tournament earlier today, winning the New South Wales Open in New Zealand by four strokes, reports the AP . The previous record was held by Ryo Ishikawa, who won his first pro title at 15 years, eight months. The previous youngest woman was Amy Yang, who won at 16 years, seven months. Massive killings by 'Crowbusters' have even hunting groups concerned

(NEWSER) - They are the "Crowbusters," a group of bird-killing fanatics in Germany that dresses in paramilitary gear and uses military-grade weapons to kill as many crows as possible, reports Der Spiegel . The reason for the massive attacks on crows, according to the Crowbusters, is that crows are "feathered vermin" and "crap-scratchers" that have grown too populous, crowding out and killing other creatures, such as rabbits and partridges. Just one hunt in northwestern Germany brought down 333 birds; another in Bavaria saw 316 killed. More»
