(Newser) – A woman needed nine hours of surgery after being attacked by a pack of eight dogs as she jogged on New Zealand's North Island, the BBC reports. She curled into a fetal position during the 15-minute attack, a move doctors say saved her life. The dogs were eventually beaten off by their owner and the woman's husband. The pig-hunting dogs have been destroyed with the consent of their owner, who faces criminal charges in the attack.

She was the most seriously injured person by dog bites I have ever seen. She had injuries all over her body—to her arms, her neck, her back, her legs. It sounds like an absolutely horrific attack. - Emergency specialist Dr. John Bonning

Mace isn't a bad Idea...but try doing that with 8 dogs.

As a jogger, carry mace or pepper spray in a fanny-pack as a deterrent. Used once, in its eyes, was quite convincing in quelling an aggressive dog.
