Houston's daughter confronts police outside hotel room

(NEWSER) - Specifics are still sketchy in yesterday's sudden death of Whitney Houston . But here's what's beginning to trickle in:

• Houston was found by a member of her entourage on the floor of her Beverly Hills hotel room around 3:30pm, reports the LA Times . Paramedics were called at 3:43pm, and tried CPR for 20 minutes, but were unable to revive her, and she was pronounced dead at 3:55pm.
• No illegal drugs have been found in the room, but TMZ reports that Houston was taking Xanax, and it is possible that she drowned in her bathtub . Combined with alcohol, Xanax can cause extreme sleepiness; the gossip site speculates that Houston fell asleep in the tub.

Singer's death 'too fresh to do more'

(NEWSER) - Whitney Houston's death barely 24 hours before the Grammy Awards left the show scrambling to honor the singer who once dominated it, but People reports that Jennifer Hudson has been selected to pay a "respectful musical tribute" during tonight's telecast. "It's too fresh in everyone's memory to do more at this time, but we would be remiss if we didn't recognize Whitney's remarkable contribution to music fans in general, and, in particular, her close ties with the Grammy telecast and her Grammy wins and nominations over the years," says the Grammys' executive producer. Robert Dewey Hoskins hadn't been seen since last Friday

(NEWSER) - The man who was convicted of stalking Madonna and threatening to slit her throat in the 1990s was apprehended today, after escaping a week ago from the Los Angeles mental health facility where he's been held since last year. Police told the AP that Robert Dewey Hoskins, 54, was taken into custody in Long Beach, about 8 miles from the hospital. Hoskins was sentenced to 10 years in prison in 1996 after climbing the wall around her Hollywood home and jumping into her pool; he was shot twice by one of her guards. More»

(NEWSER) - In The Vow, Rachel McAdams plays a woman who must learn to love her husband again after amnesia wipes her memory. It's no surprise it was released ahead of Valentine's Day: It's pure mushiness, critics say.

• In the New York Daily News , Elizabeth Weitzman calls the film a "down-the-middle, by-the-numbers fantasy, in which no one is too quirky or interesting or challenging in any way." Still, "there’s no shortage of viewers ready to embrace an old-fashioned, guilty-pleasure romance."

Music gadget expected to mark start of new focus on hardware

(NEWSER) - Google has asked the Federal Communications Commission for permission to start testing an "entertainment device," sparking speculation about what is expected to be the search giant's biggest step into creating hardware. The device, which will be tested in employees' homes this summer, is an entertainment system that can stream music wirelessly through homes, an insider tells the Wall Street Journal . It will have Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, and will "connect to other home electronics equipment," according to Google's FCC application. More»
