Paula Abdul says she won't be returning to American Idol next season, reports E! Online. Abdul, who had been in difficult contract talks with Fox ahead of the ninth season, made the announcement "with sadness in my heart" on her Twitter feed tonight. "She's a tremendous talent, and we wish her the best," said the network in a statement. The development comes a day after Fox announced that Kara DioGuardi will return for a second season.

"With sadness in my heart, I've decided not to return to #IDOL," reads Abdul's tweet. "I'll miss nurturing all the new talent, but most of all ... being a part of a show that I helped from day 1 become an international phenomenon." Abdul reportedly made about $4 million a year and had been seeking at least $12 million, notes the Washington Post.
