Scott McGann charged with placing a fake bomb, making terrorist threats

(Newser) – The man who entered LaGuardia airport with what could barely be described as a fake bomb has been charged with making a terrorist threat and placing a phony bomb, the New York Post reports. Scott McGann, 32, faces about 7 years in jail if convicted for the stunt that caused a full-scale evacuation of LaGuardia last Saturday. Authorities say McGann also was carrying a schematic for a time machine.

(NEWSER) - Roads around the Pentagon were closed today after police detained a man in Arlington National Cemetery and found his car in bushes near the Pentagon. Park police stopped the man overnight because the cemetery was closed, and found that he was carrying what was believed at the time to be ammonium nitrate and spent automatic weapon ammunition, according to ABC News . An FBI agent now says "the products found are determined right now to be inert." (NEWSER) - British authorities are investigating how a fake bomb hidden in a wedding cake box was able to make it from the UK to Turkey without being detected. (USER SUBMITTED) - An Oregon man was arrested last night and charged with attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction after trying to detonate a car bomb at a tree-lighting ceremony. Mohamed Osman Mohamud, 19, a US citizen born in Somalia, drove a van to Pioneer Courthouse Square in Portland and attempted to detonate a dummy explosive charge that had been rigged by the FBI, reports the Oregonian . "This defendant's chilling determination is a stark reminder that there are people—even here in Oregon—who are determined to kill Americans," said a state US attorney. More»

Namibia 'Bomb' Just a Security Test: Germany

Suspicious suitcase contained a prop, not explosives

(NEWSER) - The suspicious device found aboard a Namibian flight bound for Germany was a harmless fake designed to test local security, German authorities said today. “It is a so-called ‘real test suitcase’ from a US company,” Germany’s interior minister told Reuters . “This company produces alarm and detection systems, and these test suitcases are made to test security measures.” The suspect suitcase held batteries, a watch, and a detonator, but no actual explosives, meaning passengers were never in any danger, he said.
