Forum turns into rowdy shouting, shoving match

(Newser) – Rowdy protesters turned a Tampa town hall meeting on health care reform into a near-riot last night, reports the St. Petersburg Times, whose reporter at the scene likened the atmosphere to a wrestling cage match. Local Democratic Rep. Kathy Castor was shouted down by audience members crying "Tyranny!" and "40 million illegals!" as the overflow crowd waiting outside the building pounded on the doors.

"They can't even run a meeting, and they want to run health care?" asked one activist as the meeting became chaotic. Many of the estimated 1,500 people in attendance said they had been encouraged to come by an activist group promoted by Glenn Beck. Castor—who left the meeting early after being drowned out by the boos and jeers—said that while a strong debate is healthy, some "phony protests" are being created by the GOP and insurance industry.

I don't understand why the police don't remove those being disruptive. Hecklers are removed from meetings all the time. Why are these town hall meetings and these loudmouths any different? Are the Democrats paying absolute lip service to "bi-partisanship"? These people are just organized hecklers.

If they listen to Beck, then they are well informed. Glenn has been talking about these and he urges people to speak out as all Americans should if they disagree with something, but he STRESSED numerous times to be peaceful and well mannered. He never promoted getting out-of-control. The democrats are trying to blow this up with a media blitz of commercials and propaganda blaming some conservatives, insurance companies, and Glenn Beck. Interestingly enough the dems are all saying the exact same thing and singling out Glenn Beck. They didn't like Glenns remark about Obama being a racist a few days ago, so I think they are attacking him with this.

Well, can anyone who watches Glenn Beck confirm this? It's enough that they identify that way, but I'd like just a little bit more reassurance before I go start pointing fingers. I've heard it from quite a few sources this is true, but I haven't heard directly from someone admitting to be a part of the organization. Even if they're not staged this is just a terrible way to have a civil democracy. I've said it before and I'll say it again. When one resorts to yelling over one's opponents that does nothing but weaken the point of the screamer. Let all who want to speak, speak. Equal time for everyone to state their case and point of view. My town halls here in Atlanta, GA often have a few individuals show up who do nothing but scream at the representative and I just find that so terrible. If you ever attend a public discussion please at least be courteous to others. Reply

I watch Glenn Beck everyday, and he DOES encourage people to be acitve, to talk to people, to go to the TownHalls, But he also tells people to follow Ghandi and Martin Luther King, JR. in their actions- he does this at the end of every show, every day. Does he give specific instructions of what to do, where to go? No, he just encourages people to DO SOMETHING.

The last night meetings were more heated because they are bringing in security and keeping people from even getting in. The ealier town halls really were pretty mild. Of course the democrats put out commercials and propaganda to try and hype things up. I mean the DNC is running ads all over attacking the conservatives, insurance companies and republicans in an effort to sway public opinion their way. It's crazy!

I Can guarantee it, too. Check out Beck's twitter account- he constantly encourages people to behvae like MLK and Ghandi- be peaceful but do not be afraid to speak up. I watch his show everyday and that's the way he ends his show, too. He is REALLY SARCASTIC about things and people take himl literally and then you get all this about him being nuts....

I want you to know that I am not completely against their platform, what I am against are the outright lies and fear-mongering coming from the rightwing and insurance supported lobbies. -- First I’ll say this, platforms are not bills. Now to the information linked. I like “Putting Patients First”. That is a principle both sides agree on. Under the First Principle, bullet 1. Health care is currently rationed in part by denying claims. So I would like to see how republicans deal with that. Bullet 4, the current public systems do not put government between patients, and neither would current proposals. This is part of the lies being spread. The last bullet, no one is talking about replacing the current system or a government monopoly. Everyone agrees, and Obama has stated that radical restructuring is not what they are talking about. Patient Control and Portability. What is the point of having an insurance policy and a health savings account? Do you have an HSA and how’s it working for you? It sounds like republicans want to add yet another level of corporate bureaucracy with HSA’s, and at the same time boost the HSA market. About the “tax system discriminates”, republicans propose to correct inequalities. How? That is not fully explained, except that it “should” be the same. What “same” actually ends up being is undefined and will probably be left to the industry. Pre-existing conditions. “We strongly urge that managed care organizations use the practice patterns and medical treatment guidelines from the state in which the patient lives when making medical coverage decisions.”, that sounds like there could possibly be 50 different programs at the least, then there would be options hopefully, and more of a hassle than actual portability. I am sure there are some good ideas there and others that are not. Out of the material I’ve covered, the stuff I did not go over I was pleased with. But again, a 2008 platform is not legislation proposed. Would you find some republican proposed bill(s) that you support?

@Citrixguy: all we ever hear from Conservatives with regard to health care reform is: "No." "Slow down." "Socialism." "Government takeover." "Kill granny." and other fear-mongering simple-minded slogans. What I'd like to hear come from the Conservatives is 10 things they'd like to see in a health reform bill. Given Obama's determination to work in a bipartisan way, I bet conservatives could get a lot of what they want in the final bill. Wouldn't this be a better approach than simply trying to stall and destroy a reform effort that is clearly needed?

@odo I don't have 10 things that I would like to see in the bill, I just have three. I would like the final bill to be deficit neutral, as the president promised (right now it's not), I would like their to be stricter control over who has access to health care, to ensure that only the people paying for it would get the care (no illegal aliens), and three I would like the assurance that if I have to change my plan I will be able to stay with my same insurance company not a gov't approved plan if I so choose. Having been in the military I kind of have a feel for what government health care is like. It wasn't all bad but it could have some delays on things. Of course it was a different situation when the doc's only care if you care able to deploy. Now what things would you like in the bill?

After reading what the conservatives want in health care reform, their appears to be a lot more in common than there is differences. Obama has indicated that the cornerstones of reform are increased competition (internet marketplace idea), protection for those with pre-existing conditions, and a public option. The only one conservatives are against is the public option. Conservatives objection to the public option is spawned out of fear of a hypothetical: that private insurance will go bankrupt in the face of govt competition. The likelihood of this doesn't appear very good given they way the bill is written. The opportunities for consensus are at the feet of Republicans, all they need to do is engage on behalf of their constituents and stop the distortions and comically overblown lies (kill granny).

I can't disagree with your premise, only that this tends to be what happens when complex issues are reduced to sound-bites peppered with invective. The whole, sit down, shut up and hold on approach isn't the exclusive preserve of any particular brand of politics and although I am a liberal (like Jefferson, Franklin and Adams) nowadays the heirs of that particular tradition have let others get away with devaluing an otherwise proud tradition of independence. I recognize the faults of the nanny state, just as I am sure you could admit the errors in the "Obey Me I'm bigger than you" approach. Looks like we may have started a conversation here. I'd suggest that we all remember how well dialog can work.

EVERYTHING EVERYONE (except socilists) WANTS IN HEALTHCARE CAN BE DONE WITH A FEW NEW LAWS AND OVERSIGHT. NOTHING requires government control! Want to protect the poor? WE ALREADY DO! Want to get coverage with pre-existing conditions? Pass a new law requiring it! This may cause prices to go up a little, but it's better than GOVERNMENT CONTROL. Want everyone to sign up? Sorry, but that won't happen no matter what- there are always those that won't participate no matter what, and THAT IS THEIR FAULT, not yours, not mine, not the governments, BUT THEIRS!!!

Godawgs, the idea is that if we stick with the status quo, healthcare costs will double again over the next 10 years as they did the last ten years. And if paychecks continue to be stagnant, people will cancel healthcare policies. Thus, the loss of healthcare in 2018.

well all the unfortunate folks that currently don't have health insurance for whatever reason can just continue to go to emergency rooms at exorbitant cost to those of us who do have insurance while their defaulted payment of those emerg. bills for that care go to the credit agencies, that report to the potential employers when they try to get a job. does that work for you guys/gals? MANY of those poeple choose not to be covered for various reasons- pride if they are too poor (won't sign up for welfare), citizenship if they are illegal, and just not wanting to to keep money (they could have signed up but they didn't because they didn't want to spend the money and didn't feel like they need it). DO YOU WANT TO PERSONALLY PAY FOR THOSE PEOPLE? Because that is what you will be doing. Me, personally, I don't want to.

@teaching: you already pay for these people. Where do you think the money comes from? They don't get magical free care. The question is, do you want to pay triple because they have to go to the ER, or do you want to pay much less once they can go to a regular doctor?

If they WERE going to go to a regular doctor, they would have health insurance already. THEY CHOOSE NOT TO. THE ONLY REASON THEY GO TO THE ER IS BECAUSE THE ER MUST TAKE THEM. The doctor can say no if he wants, but not the ER. Gimme a break...

WRONG. They have always supported peaceful protest. They always talk about it on their show. They would not condemn people so quickly, not when they believe so strongly that the protesting is for a strong reason they support, not to just "angrily mob" the politicians. If anything turns violent, it won't be because of the so-called angry mob.

I'm not listening to anyone on Medicare or a government program who says they don't want a single payer system or a public option. When they drop their socialized medicine and pay for their medical care with private insurance, then I'll listen. Otherwise, I want what they have: government healthcare! I'm also not listening to anyone who claims to hate government but takes the government's dime and uses all the government services, including roads, communications, internet, and regulation services. Please show you're not beholden to the hated government by taking a below-minimum-wage job and using lead paint! Thanks! Reply
