Wise Latinas Embrace Their New Label

By Harry Kimball,  Newser Staff

(Newser) – GOP senators may have pooh-poohed Sonia Sotomayor’s “wise Latina” comment, but wise Latinas everywhere are wearing the phrase like a badge of honor, the New York Times reports. From t-shirts to blogs, women of Hispanic heritage have warmed to the phrase much like other minority groups appropriate slurs, a linguist says. “‘Wise Latina’ is not just sticking your chin up. It’s a fist in the air.”

A Mexican-American state senator from Texas who had t-shirts made up reading “Another wise Latina woman” says the phrase is empowering, and reminds her of nurturing female elders and “our matriarchal culture.” A younger supporter finds a lesson for today: “You have to be really wise to wake up in the morning and go to school and work and come home and not get involved in the negative things."

One thing that helps something catch on is the perception of an enemy outside. It’s pride, but pride born in opposition. - John H. McWhorter, Manhattan Institute for Policy Research

Like how liberaljesus decided he knows how all white people think?! uhh, yeah, my daughter is cognitively disabled severe. Think I don't know how to fight? Believe it or not, insurance companies don't always do what is "right" or even what the doctor recommends! yeah, I know. My point is don't blame me for history that happened before I was even born. White people DO get frustrated with people that have chips on their shoulders, entitlement issues, and lack of responsibility for themselves. And THAT isn't limited to any one skin color. People need to be judged individually - not clumped in a group and stereotyped. Might be obvious - but liberaljesus apparently didn't get it.

And I'm sorry but ignorance is ignorance - regardless of skin color. I'm not a nazi, not a slave owner, never hurt a native american...None of that. I also am not overly proud OR embarassed of being born with the skin color I have. I had nothing to do with it. But I believe our contributions to society outweigh the mistakes we've made in the past. AND I believe we can learn from them and make better choices in the future. But I refuse to take the blame for choices made in the distant past. That was then - this is now.
