7.1 Earthquake Rocks Tokyo

No casualties, or threats of a tsunami, reported

Share

(Newser) – A 7.1 earthquake rattled Tokyo and surrounding areas today, AP reports. The strong quake, which struck just before 8 pm local time, disrupted trains and a professional baseball game, but so far there are no reports of damage or casualties, and no threat of a resulting tsunami. Japan is one of the world’s most earthquake-prone countries, and experts say Tokyo has a 90% chance of being rocked by a major quake within the next 50 years.

I felt it. I am 100 km or so south of Tokyo. The earthquake was somewhat rolling -- not a quick, violent shaking, but more someone slapping a waterbed. It lasted a long time -- seemingly 30 seconds or more. Reply

Glad to hear you're OK Greg - Nana korobi, ya oki . Let's not see a repeat of Kobe; Hanshin-Awaji Daishinsai - 6.8 (adjusted from 7.2). You may consider, if you already haven't, head down to Kobe and see the Disaster Reduction Museum (DRI) - humbling / enlightening. (English PDF: http://www.dri.ne.jp/images/english_all.pdf).

That's crazy. They must build things pretty well for there not to have been any damage, right? Isn't a 7.1 a big 'un? Reply

Yes, 7.1 is big, but it was deep and out at sea. In the Izu Islands, some sparsely populated, it may have been pretty violent.

shonangreg is right. It could have been worse. It could have set off an underwater avalanche which could have triggered off a tsunami. There are tons of variables. (I live in Alaska, and we get bunches of earthquakes.)
