(Newser) – An obese inmate in Texas has admitted to smuggling a gun into prison, the AP reports—in between his rolls of fat. Authorities had searched George Vera, 25, at least three times after initially arresting him for selling illegal copies of CDs, but never found the unloaded 9mm pistol. The 500-pound Vera, who was discovered with the gun in the shower, has been charged with possession of an illegal weapon in a correctional facility, which could get him as many as 10 years in prison.

(NEWSER) - Texas prisons are taking some heat over a decision to keep cooks out of their kitchens. Since April the state has been serving prisoners just two meals a day on weekends in some prisons, in an effort to cut food service costs, the New York Times reports. (Amusingly, the meal that is served between 5am and 7am is called brunch.) That puts the state out-of-step with American Correctional Association guidelines, which recommend three meals per day, with some variations allowed. But “I’ve never read the standard to mean you can do it every weekend,” the head of the Association says. More»

(NEWSER) - More US guns seized in Mexican drug violence come from Texas than any other state—and more come from Houston than any other Texas city, the Washington Post finds after a year-long investigation. The probe isolated the top 12 US dealers of guns traced to Mexico, and uncovered the biggest: Bill Carter, whose Houston-area chain of stores is the source of more than 115 guns seized in the past 2 years. (NEWSER) - A convicted burglar slipped out of prison in Texas to make a late-night run to Wal-Mart for cigarettes, then slipped back in. About 70 different times. The 19-year-old reportedly dyed his prison uniform with coffee so he wouldn't raise eyebrows at the store, reports the Austin American-Statesman . Actor was drunk, armed with revolver: cops

(NEWSER) - Rip Torn is due in court tomorrow after allegedly breaking into a bank while "highly intoxicated" and carrying a loaded gun, Connecticut state police say. The 78-year-old actor broke a window to gain entry to a Salisbury bank Friday evening and is being held on $100,000 cash bond, reports the Litchfield County Register Citizen . The Dodgeball and 30 Rock star, who has a history of drunk driving arrests, apparently thought he was in his own house, the bank president tells TMZ . More»
