Cheesy pickup lines aren’t just a turn off, but a measure of a man’s “genes and fitness,” according to a new study in Personality and Individual Differences. They also reveal the personality the man is looking for. Men know ladies aren’t fond of sexual jokes, for example, but researchers theorize that the lines are designed to find more promiscuous partners.

The study divided women by personality, and had them rate opening moves from movies, TV and the internet. Some fared well across the board, but others varied. Extroverted women, for example, liked jokes, while non-conformists hated displays of wealth. A male group was able to mostly predict the rankings—but tended to overrate the chances of risqué lines for success. (More psychology stories.)
