(Newser) – Goofy kids character Pee-wee Herman will live again on a Los Angeles stage in a November comeback series by creator Paul Reubens, reports the Los Angeles Times. "I've put him away for a long time but part of him has always been with me," Reubens said in an interview. The extraordinarily popular child-man Pee-wee suffered a major blow when Reubens was busted for indecent exposure in 1991, and pleaded guilty 13 years later to possessing obscene images of children.

Pee-Wee was actually INVENTED on an LA stage (for the improv group "The Groundlings," where he "existed" for years before the skit was filmed for an HBO special in 1981. I love the character (enjoyed the TV show and both movies -- without being stoned, even!) but am a little ambivalent about "his" return. If Reubens returns to it to being a riff ON kiddie-show characters, aimed at adults, that wouldn't bother me. He's got two strikes (the 91 arrest and the '04 porn charge). If he's cleaned up his (personal) act, fine. If he hasn't, this is his final moment in the spotlight.

I found his show absolutely charming as a young'un. I find it charming today as a stoned adult.

I remember for awhile Adult Swim would play Pee Wee's playhouse. Adult Swim knows what stoned adults want.
