The man who showed up at President Obama's town hall today with a gun defended his right to do just that when grilled by Chris Matthews on his show tonight, reports the Huffington Post. When Matthews asked why he showed up with a weapon strapped to his leg, William Kostric answered, "That's not even a relevant question. The question is, why don't people bear arms these days." He also got cute when he acknowledged the gun was loaded. "Who'd be silly enough to carry an unloaded firearm?"

The police let Kostric be because he was standing on private property near the town hall. He also held a sign saying it's "time to water the tree of liberty," a reference to a line from Thomas Jefferson that the "tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants." Kostric told Matthews that his was a nonviolent protest and that "no one from New Hampshire was alarmed. Maybe some of the people they bused in from Massachusetts were alarmed. But we're not really concerned about them." (More William Kostric stories.)
