Obama: Sotomayor's Rise an 'Inspiration for Generations'

White House holds reception for new justice

(AP) – President Obama today celebrated the rise of Sonia Sotomayor to become the Supreme Court's newest member and first Hispanic, hailing her story and achievement as an inspiration for generations. "When Justice Sotomayor put her hand on that Bible and took that oath ... we came yet another step to the more perfect union that we all seek," Obama told a White House reception for Sotomayor.

The gathering was packed with her family and friends, as well as the lawmakers, advocates, Hispanic community leaders and others who helped shepherd her confirmation through the Senate. "Because while this is Justice Sotomayor's achievement, the result of her ability and determination, this moment is not just about her. It's about every child who will grow up thinking to him- or herself, ‘If Sonia Sotomayor can make it, then maybe I can too.’"

It is our nation's faith in a more perfect union that allows a Puerto Rican girl from the Bronx to stand here now.

I personally find her inspiring, as someone who was raised by a single mother, attended an Ivy League school without an Ivy League sized wallet, then to rise to the highest court in the country. Whether you agree with her judgments or not, she is a role model, someone positive for young people (especially girls) to look up to as a person who set a goal and achieved it. Reply

And she will be a good role model IF she rules by the constitution and not by her fallible "wise latina" emotions and sympathies. Reply

That was always a total red herring. When Alito was confirmed he was praised for being empathetic. http://debatebothsides.com/showthread.php?t=79506

Yeah Timmy, because we all know that wise white men never rule by their emotions and sympathies. (sarcasm)
