Marines Launch New Afghan Assault

Share

(AP) – US Marines battled Taliban fighters today for control of a strategic southern town in a new operation to cut militant supply lines and allow Afghan residents to vote in next week's presidential election. Insurgents appeared to dig in for a fight, firing rocket-propelled grenades, mortar rounds, and even missiles from the back of a truck. Officers predicted days of combat before the town is secured.

"Based on the violence with which they've been fighting back against us, I think it indicates the Taliban are trying to make a stand here," said a Marine captain. About 400 Marines were joined by 100 Afghan fighters in the battle. It's the third major push by US and British forces this summer into Taliban-controlled areas of Helmand province, center of Afghanistan's lucrative opium business and scene of some of the heaviest fighting of the Afghan war.

I know this is a dumb thing to ask but I'm going to ask it anyways. We are spending billions to outfit our guys with this war and we have the best army in History and so 1st question, why is it taking so long to defeat this enemy and 2nd question is, Where is the Taliban getting all there monies to finance their army against us and if we knew couldn't we try to cut off their funds? No money, no war, right ? Reply

The primary problem is that there are between 200,000 and 400,000 armed men with no skill other than their ability to use their weapon. They have never had any other jobs (war has been a constant in Afghanistan for 20 years now). If the Taliban can pay them, they'll fight for the Taliban. If drug lords or Al Qaeda foot the bill, they're okay with that, too. If no one pays them, they turn to robbery. We can not beat them by force of arms. We might want to consider buying them. It is the traditional way to "win" a war in Afghanistan.

1) The mountainous terrain of Afghanistan helped the Taliban hide. It's hard to fight an enemy when you can't find them. 2) Opium. Afghanistan is the worlds #1 exporter of the drug.

1. the short answer is that there is not one localized enemy for us to destroy. The people we are fighting are very delocalized, and when one apparent leader pops up, we take him out, only for another to take his place. 2. another short answer; many groups we are fighting get their money from heroin sales. also, bin ladin and co are ridiculously rich.
